Well, I was mistaken to say DVD software, I meant AC3 encoders.

What are you referring to? BeSweet? I've heard several people say that there was some concern that it didn't generate wholly compliant AC3 streams (and it did generate rather different sized files than another encoder I know is fully compliant). A fully compliant, legal (and somewhat affordable) AC3 encoder is really the only thing I'm still needing to track down...

Hmmm, it seems you are correct. I wasn't aware of that.
Not quite free, but tmpg offers an ac3 encoder for $30. http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=70413

 Rawk! That's not bad at all... just about every other AC3 solution I've seen has been several hundred dollars minimum. $30 is a steal. Will definitely have to snag that when I get home tonight. Thanks!

back on topic, if you do use premier or any other vid editor (besides vegas) then the least you could do is dl a demo of vegas4 . actualy the demo is prety limited. allthough its a bit unethical ya should just get a keygen to test it out for real, then if you like it (you will) then reinstall and buy a proper licence. if ya dont (meaning your mentaly insane :P ) then just uninstall it

While it might not be the recomended method, this is exactly what I did.
It's gone now, and not likely to come back. Here are the results of the little vegas trip. (heh, had to throw that in there)

I found that Vegas does indeed have some superior features that I would dearly love to see on Premiere:
1: works directly with .vob files, no avisynth (awesome as it is), no virtual dub, no dvd2avi.. you get it
2: a really nice splitscreen preview mode (no rendering required)
2.1: the effects control menu is a lot like the new effects control for photoshop 7 (go figure) so it was dead easy to figure out.
3: a fairly intuitive method for getting things.
4: VERY nice integration with the dvd architect, I like that you can set the chapter marks in the editing program and have them carry over.
5: the dvd submenu and selection system was simple and easy to learn.

I haven't tested it with after effects, nor did I test any of the matte functions. Similarly I didn't really keep it long enough to learn any fancy stuff. On my machine, the program was real cpu hog too, 'specially with the .vob files. I can't see really purchasing it though, at the moment I have thousands tied up in the digital video packs (8 of them). Probably if there was a similar bundle I'd switch over in a couple years though.

So, I guess Bum has some valid points.
Say.. isn't there a software review on the .org somewhere?
