That's exactly what the trimmer does. It just creates a window that let's you scrub through the clip's own timeline, mark in\out points, and drop that segment into the main timeline.

apparently the drag the entire clip onto the timeline and trim it there?

dude trimmer = select part you want, drag to the timeline O.o how hard can it seriously be?

I've never used the trimmer. I have a feeling that is why I use subclips. Split my clips on the main timeline, create subclips, then drag them back on the timeline where I want them. I'm guessing that's similar to the reason for using the trimmer.
