^ This.

There's the big stuff, like staying up til the early morning in order to bring back the forums and making probably the biggest donation that this site has ever seen. And then there are the little things, like indulging people's whims on username changes and always keeping a positive attitude, even through all the crap that he's had to put up with. You probably don't know half the things doki does, because he doesn't demand attention at all. Others have indeed contributed to this site, but in my opinion, doki has clearly been the most helpful in the past year.

To treat the category seriously for once, while doki probably is very helpful he helps in ways that no one else can do because most of us don't have the ability to change usernames, update code, etc. I'm inclined to believe most helpful should go to someone that helps in ways anyone could do. The person who answers the exact same question 50 times in a row for new users or the person who maintains a guide and provides technical help, those are the type of people I think actually deserve the award. Any one of us could do that type of thing, we just decided not to.

That being said, most of the people up for most helpful are either obvious jokes or are people who have reputations for helpfulness but actually didn't do all that much in 2008. So dokidoki for most helpful, at least he actually did help a lot in 2008.

I agree with you, but I'd also like to point out that in practice, it goes both ways. The time and energy taken up by admin-only stuff makes it difficult to do all those things you mentioned that anybody can do.

You said that "Any one of us could do that type of thing, we just decided not to." Why not? I would certainly be grateful for people who DO take the initiative to be helpful around here. Conversely, Tim has the ability to do the little things like change people's names, but he doesn't HAVE to do them. But he does anyway. Because he actually cares about making this site an enjoyable place to be. That, to me, is what makes the difference.

While it is true that he can do stuff in ways normal members can not, I think dedication is more important an aspect to consider than abilities.

To put it in the context you gave:
AFAIK, he is the only admin that processes the banner queue, the only admin that consistently does the name change requests, and for a long time the only admin making changes to the site. He doesn't have to do these things, and there are others that are capable, but he is the one that takes the time from his day to ensure they are done.

If it was any other admin or mod that made the finals, I don't think I would still vote for them. (Not to say anything bad about my fellow mods and admins, but I just think he puts in that much effort.)

oops, looks like Jasper beat me. :P

Don't you get enough cynical bastard ranting from org users without asking for one more?

Anyway, we don't because I believe to a large degree the established persona's of the org operate on inertia rather than actual concern or caring about the community.

And I'm not saying saying Doki wouldn't deserve Most Helpful, I think it's pretty clear he does. I'm just saying there's other aspects to be considered beyond 'he does admin stuff so he's helpful'. That being said, he does bring a level of effort beyond the minimum you'd expect out of any admin that if I were going to vote seriously on Most Helpful he's who I would vote for consider I don't seriously think the other four deserve it for their actions in 2008. Prior to that, maybe, but not for just that year.

That's not an accurate interpretation, and it misses my point. He doesn't do this just cause he's an admin - he does it because he cares. His helpfulness mostly manifests as admin stuff because that's the position that he's already in and, having taken on all of that, it's difficult to also tackle non-admin stuff. There's no advantage conferred by being part of the administration. I certainly believe that ordinary members can be very helpful around the site, and I would definitely support the people that do.

Anyway, I think I've said enough on this topic now.

Really?

Not saying he doesn't care here, in fact I'm definitely of the belief that he does. But all I know of human nature is, the hardest workers are usually the ones in power or positions of leadership. Those who didn't attain that level, are more often than not only idle peons. Had doki not been an admin, had he not been imbued with a sense of responsibility by being in that position, who's to say that he'll endevour to be just as helpful if he were just another guy in the pile. At the end, this is going to become a "chicken and the egg" argument :P
