Need someone to give me some feedback on my first ever AMV

Post by oooasis20022 » Thu Dec 02, 2004 1:16 am

As it says I need some input on my first ever AMV, I made it with Adobe Premier. I have wanted to make quiet a few videos but I want to wait till my skill is better so I need to know what I am doing wrong and what I am doing right. 8-)

Okay I guess I am not going to sugarcoat because there is a lot to say.

First of all since you are on your first video i will forgive that this is linkinballz. The genre has been given its own name because it is so overdone. But again its forgivable just more of a passing comment.

Now, if you are making an amv you really need to invest in some dvd's because image quality is very important. Its hard to take a video seriously when fansubs are being used or VHS are being used. You have the telltale discolorations that come from most vhs content. You can limit this by using virtualdub to crop those edges and resize it as needed.

Also your encoding in windows movie maker is of rather low quality. at full screen on a 800*600 resolution monitor there was heavy pixelation. If you must use windows media, make sure you put all your settings to the highest availiable resolution and quality settings. If you do so then you can at least aquire something that is of reasonable viewability.

One other little no no you did was the switch between full and widescreen. Admitedly you kept all the widescreen scenes at the end and thus there was only one switch whcih made it less distracting. But it is not advised for the most part.

Editingwise it seems too random. There was little syncronization to either music or lyrics, making the times when it did synch seem almost accidental. Think more about putting together something with a story or focus as opposed to 'this was a cool scene' alone.

On the plus side, not having subtitles through the video was certainly a blessing. It is probably the most annoying and common amv mistake.

So you make a lot of the amature errors. You'll learn more as time goes on so don't take the criticism as a personal assualt and trying to discourage you from doing videos. Usually there's always a jump in quality between first and second vids.

I suggest this video to everyone new to making AMVs. It more or less can be taken as a guide of what NOT to do for an AMV

I am the bone of my sword
Steel is my body and fire is my blood
I have created over a thousand blades
Unknown to Death
Nor known to Life
Have withstood pain to create many weapons
Yet, those hands will never hold anything
So as I pray, unlimited blade works.

Let me just say this, not to be mean, but to try and be helpful. This is a typical first amv. You took a clip, let it run a while to the music, then was like, okay, thats done, lets try another clip. Although thats an easy road to take, you'll get a lot of messages like this

in response to such a video. Now that being said, let me give you a few pointers. As Illia Sadri already said, Video quality is very important, even if it isn't perfect, it is best to have decent quality so you can at least watch it on 200%. Your quality was so aweful, that I had to watch at 50% on a laptop, and i still saw a LOT of pixelation. The capture quality would've most likely been given a 2 had it been op'ed by someone on the org. thats a 2 out of 10 if you didn't know, thats bad. Alright that being said, vid quality can be overlooked IF the video is very well made. Meaning you timed up well. This is something you also need a lot of work on. You need to pay more attention to the music. Listen to the drumbeats, listen to the big hits in the music. I'm sure you know where they are and can find them yourself. The first thing you need to do is time big hits in the anime to big hits in the music. Like Goku going SSJ, or a big explosion, or a punch or something. At this moment in your editing phase, timing something to a hit would be a great achievement. Letting a clip run through a big hit is something that just can't be done if you want any good things said about your video. That being said, your Sound quality was good, but not great. and as was said before, a LinkinBall Z vid should be avoided at all costs. As for that, if you would like more tips etc., you can IM me if you deem it necessary (or PM me ifyou don't have AIM) either way, keep up the work, and maybe we'll get something good out of you yet. Nice try
