How much does bias effect star ratings?
Alrighty, about almost a month ago I made an AMV entitled "OhEmGeeTruLuv" The song was "I Hope You Die" from The Bloodhound Gang. The anime featured was Slayers, and the video was pretty much a mockery of the Lina and Zel alternate coupling. Now, I know it's not the best thing out there by no stretch of the imagination, but I still think it's pretty good. I've gotten two opinions on it, which were both good and everyone that I know personally who I've shown it to says it's good... Yet it has a low star rating.. And I mean LOW. Lower than the ratings of all my other videos, lower that the rating that even my FIRST AMV got. I know it has some problems in it, but it is no way worse than my first video. I'm wondering why though, I've been told that it's good but the star rating says otherwise. Is it just a bunch of people that actually like the Lina/Zel coupling and are letting their bias effect their opinion or is there something seriously wrong with it? If so I'd like to know so I don't make the mistake in future videos....
Here's a link to download it. http://www.animemusicvideos.org/members ... hp?v=45316
I changed a few things about it, nothing too drastic, but the slightly better version of it can be found on my website at http://amelia_seyruun.250free.com/music.html
Thanks.

Don't feel bad some people don't even look at what they are rating sometimes which is wrong. Also this happend with my second amv which was the first to be put up on the local. (Gene's Last Breath) It has a 3.20. WTF?! and other videos that are better has a lower rating. So it isn't only you.

It's not the end of the world. I don't really look at the star ratings that much because I think it is the feedback on the ops you get is what counts.

I really don't think that would be the reason for getting a low star rating. If people were that opposed to seeing a negative perspective on that pairing, they probably wouldn't download it in the first place. A reason for the discrepancy between the opinions and star ratings could have to do with the fact that friends and reviewers are usually more complimentary about videos on the whole. Since you asked what the shortcomings were of this particular video, I downloaded it and will run it down for you here.
First of all, the video quality isn't very good. Even though the file's 56 MB, it's still a .wmv file, and that format makes it very difficult to get high quality. Second, the scene changes and other actions don't always sync up with the beat, and some of the scenes seem rather long for a fast-paced video like this. Next, there's a lot of lip flap (not counting the bits where you're lip-syncing or inserting text to make the arguments), and although I can see it being hard to remove all of it from a source like Slayers, there are ways it can be done. And on a few occasions, adding lyric sync (like with the wedding dress) interrupts the flow of the video, and seems out of place.
Anyway, those are the parts that I saw that could possibly use improvement. I didn't want to leave these in an opinion, as I don't like giving lower scores, so I posted here in hopes that an objective perspective on the matter might help you out. In my honest opinion, it's a good concept, but overall, an average video. It's got potential; if you work through a few of the issues I could see it becoming something really good. I hope you'll understand that I'm trying to be constructive and give a few pointers to help you out in the future. That said, I hope this was helpful.

Heh, I wouldn't worry about it. Star ratings, in my opinion, are not really all that accurate.
For example. One of my latest videos, Advance Wars 3, up until a few days ago, had a lower star rating than another video of mine called Angelography Mk2. Advance Wars 3 is numer 160 something on the top 10% list of AMVs, while Angelography, well, let's just say that it isn't and probably never will be
I put much more effort into Advance Wars 3 to get the same star rating.
But I think in the end it doesn't really matter (oh that was a terrible pun) because what really matters is how those around you and how you feel about your video. If you think it's good, then that's really the important thing.

A huge thing that affects star ratings is file format. A while back, I couldn't figure out why some of my newer videos were getting low star ratings. The reason is more than likely the fact that I used XviD instead of DivX-compatible XviD, which for some reason a large number of people STILL can't play properly on their computers. Once I started putting links to FFDSHOW in my video descriptions, the start ratings climbed back up to more likely levels.
Same with .wmv. Some people will automatically give a .wmv a 1 or a 2. Despite the video.

heh, my first video ever edited , wich is by far not perfect, has a star rating of 3.7, while Angels redemption, my best ever, and far superior in editing to my first has a 3.8. thats star ratings for ya. one of my better vids has a 3.5 also, even though its way better than my first, but uses a less popular anime/song choice. Some people will give a great AMV a low star rating just because they didn;t like it. Star ratings are relative. Opinions, especially the kinds that are voluntary and didn;t ask for, are the ones that count the most IMO.
