The AMV had a huge disconnect for me. I've seen the anime and understand the connection to the lyrics, but the passion and adrenaline of the singer was way too much for it. The main character is way too passive and stand-offish to connect to that song. AMVs are kinda like a relationship between the anime and the music that you pick. But if your song and anime feel like polar opposites with little to no common ground, the distance between them makes it harder for people to relate the two.
So my tip to you is to find stronger source combos that really feel like the characters in the show reflect the emotions of your songs (and not just simply the lyrics).
