Received bad opinion - Am I too sensitive about it?

Post by kitsunebeolnet » Sun Jun 06, 2004 6:24 am

I released my 3rd video ever (all 3 this past week) and openly asked for opinions because of its similarities to my next project.

(For those who want the rundown without looking at my profile, I used a comedy song titled 'Perry had a Pimple' by Heywood Banks. set to FLCL.)

The first and only person so far to leave me an opinion trashed it, said "anyone could have made this."; complained there wasn't any timing or "surprises", and that it was a snoozer. (I did get very high marks for audio and video quality.)

Ouch.

I have a small problem with his comments because:

1. No one else HAS done this.

2. For those familiar with FLCL, I don't expect there to be any surprises. The joke is in knowing the song matches the video.

3. I think I did a pretty good job on the timing.

I checked his videos and noted his style. (NOT to leave a bad opinion back!) He seems to prefer a constant scene/flash/scene style...one that should come with a warning for epileptics. More power to him.

I openly admitted in my comments I probably should have dug deeper for even more clips...a couple of scenes I do let drag too long. I'm curious if this is simply a clashing of different styles?

I've watched the video and yes, there isn't much timing even if it's a lyric sync video and you don't want to add stylish flashes or other beat sync effects, there's still a lot of timing you can add to the video.

For example at 0:59 the text is something like "pinched it with his fingers" and the matching event with the finger happened 1-2 secs earlier, just time it so that it appaers a second after the line and you have a great timing effect.

I hope this helps a bit.

Ok, that does help. I noticed I do tend to favor longer shots that have only 1-2 scenes that 'lyric synch' as opposed to tighter shots that are dead-on.

My advice on taking criticism: Don't be sensitive about. Ignore obvious flaming comments. But... be sure when somebody tells you something important, that you should heed it. In this case, he mentions timing and surprises. If you feel you need to work on it, work on it. However, he might just be straight hating on you as well. It's up to you to decipher hate from constructive criticism.

The guy may actually be trying to help, since he did tell you what was wrong about it. He could have just said "It sucked balls, never make a vid again!" that would be a flame opinion to ignore. but some poeple are just not as diplomatic at how to tell you whats wrong with the video, and thus it takes a level of patience, maturity, and calmness to decipher what you can use of his comments to better yourself, and weedout the "flamatory" remarks. Basically what Unsent vibes said, since I pretty much just said what he said in different words.

Which is good since half the time I have no idea what I'm talking about and I end up talking out of my ass in a fartific orchestra of amusement... possibly something to put in an amv... I'm thinking Ultimate Muscle.

"It sucked balls, never make a vid again!"

Out of the mouths of babes. Thats pretty much what the second reviewer left. (A guy with a usefull rating of '9'.)

Herbert West was much more usefull in explaning what 'timing' needed worked on. I was happy just to have the scenes I cut change with the music even though the actual action could have been done better. THAT was a good opinion.

I let myself get carried away with worrying about what everyone else thought and forgot that I'm doing this to amuse myself and my friends. If it works for me, I'm happy. If anyone else doesn't like it, tough.

Oh well, I have gotten some good feedback out of this. (If not a good review.) AND...I have the inspiration for my next project.

BTW - Unsent Vibes

I'm not thinking about stealing your idea. I'm thinking Wierd Al's 'Genius in France' suits my mood perfectly.
