Masking with switching frames
hey guys, i have a problem with the masking.
When i try to mask f.e. a character of a clip and watch it after im done with it, it doesn't look the way i planed it to.....It looks like i was drunk when i masked it. after i looked at the mask paths again i recognized that the some frames switchet places and my mask 1 suits to frame 2...mask 2 to frame 4 or whatever......Also the preview window shows me always another picture then the masking tool ( but still the same frame)
Plz help me !! ^^
And can u plz tell me which program you prefer? Adobe Premiere Pro or Sony vegas..and what ist after effects good for?
thanks for reading and sry for bad english >.<

Re: Masking with switching frames
You should tell us which program you are using, though...
...but from the sound of it, it seems like you are masking with Vegas. That issue occurs when the framerate of your clip doesn't match the framerate of the project, and can be fixed by having both with the same framerate.
As for preferred program... it really depends, I personally prefer premiere and the adobe suite in general, others like vegas more, others again prefer magix. You should just try the trial for all of them and decide which suits your taste's best.
As for after effects, it's a program to make effects and compositing, it comes in help if you wish to do well and more easily complex effects and motion graphics.

Re: Masking with switching frames
hmm i tried it out a few times but it still doesn't work...Here are some pictures:
http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff24 ... ehler1.jpg on this one you can see the correct masking in the masking tool but you also see NOT the same picture(which is the problem i think) in the preview window
http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff24 ... ehler2.jpg on this picture we still have the same pic in the preview window like in pic 1 but the picture in the masking tool changed although im still on the first "diamond". that happens when i switch from diamond 1 to diamond 2 and then go back to diamond 1 ...Tadaa! A new image! =(
http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff24 ... ehler3.jpg this pic shows the same behavior like pic 2....only that i went from diamond 1 to ca. 00:00:00,20 secs and then back again
Here are the properties modulations of the clip (to mask): http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff24 ... /prop1.jpg
and the whole project itself : http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff24 ... /prop2.jpg

Re: Masking with switching frames
Well, here's a couple of things you can try. Since you're changing the speed of the clip, in that clip properties box, click "Disable resample."
Also, in the project properties, change the Field Order to Progressive instead of Lower Field First.
On a related note, if you go the 'Media' tab of the clip's properties, what codec (or compression) is the clip using? I think Vegas calls it one of those two things......it might just call it Format – I forget.

Re: Masking with switching frames
Hi LivingFlame, thx for your answer but its still not working correctly. it is only a bit better now ( seems like only every third/fourth frame is different -maskingtoll <-> preview window).
And it is using the " ffdshow Video Codec"

Re: Masking with switching frames
That happens to me once in a while and I'm sure there are better ways to fix it but I'll tell you what I do. (I think the way I use vegas a lot of times is pretty unusual)flyleaf wrote:hmm i tried it out a few times but it still doesn't work...Here are some pictures:

Cut your clip at the beginning of each frame you are masking. Delete all of the making keyframes but the one that fits each specific clip. So at the beginning of each clip it will be a new position with the mask that fits it. Then put velocity envelope into each clip and set them to 0% velocity. That way each clip is only one frame but you have them all together so it looks like it's moving. So technically it's like having a bunch of still images with one mask for each.
I hope I'm explaining okay and it's not too hard to understand

Here's an example:

This problem doesn't happen to me often so this works for me.

Re: Masking with switching frames
Make sure the quantize to frames option is on. It's at the top of the options menu. If you can zoom in really tight to your main timeline and move the time indicator between frames, then the quantize to frames option is off. You want it on. Once you make sure the option is on, move your clip one frame to either side of where it is to make sure it is not locked between frames.
