Masking: Stepping through a top layered mask

I have an idea where I'd like to have the screen (the masks top layer) be either ripped or breaked by a beast from behind that layer who makes a whole in the middle of the screen, and then steps over and walks through that whole to become the main main figure/front layer. Any one have some good ideas or knowlege of how to do this?

use several layers... for the main beast put it in the back (or on the bottom layer), do the shatter on the middle and the parts of the beast that go in front of the shattered part put them on the top layer.... its going to take a long time to do but if you pull it off it might look cool
