Stone Temple Pilots

Post by RamonesFan2020204 » Sun Jul 30, 2006 12:14 am

I don't know why so many people consider these guys grunge, because I think they're good, and if they were a grunge band, they'd suck. Just because they exploded in the early 90's with Pearl Jam and Nirvana doesn't mean they're a grunge act. Plus I think the only people who say they're a grunge band haven't heard any stuff of theirs other than some of the stuff on "Core". Anyway, this band is great. Several weeks back, I managed to purchase all 5 of their studio albums (one I ordered online, and didn't recieve 'til next week, when I also bought the "Thank You" CD + DVD combo pack). Scott Weiland's cool, because he's a trouble maker, and them trouble makers are always cool. 8-) I think of all the videos of theirs I've seen (haven't seen every single one), that I like the "Days of the Week" video, and I love the part where Scott dresses up like Gary Numan. :D In addition to that song, I also like:

Creep
Plush
Vasoline
Unglued
Trippin' On A Hole In A Paper Heart
And So I Know
Ride The Cliche
Adhesive
Down
Heaven & Hot Rods
Days Of The Week
Hollywood Bitch

This list isn't complete, because I haven't really been that interested in the band until lately.

I'm a better fan of early STP. I don't much care for the later songs, that is, those that came with Sour Girl. My fav song by STP is Interstate Love Song. Also happens to be my fav STP video! I like the guy with the long nose! He reminds me of Fflewddur Fflam from The Book of Three.

I'd say they're often considered grunge because of the work they did during the grunge era. It's certainly more dynamic than, for instance Nirvana, but I guess it's somehow in the same vein. I mean grunge is pretty much what broke 80's music, and we definitely don't want STP to be 80's music!

I think Soundgarden suffers from the same symptoms of "not-really-being-grunge-but-being-classified-as-grunge" that you detail above. Their music is often simply too dynamic to fit well into "grunge," which I think is supposed to have a sort of disaffected feel in its simplicity.

Don't get me wrong, I like Nirvana a lot too, but they are grunge, and STP and Soundgarden aren't =P

Creep is a really good song. I think I might call it grunge, or at least grungy.

actually when you said you liked "Creep" I instantly assumed you meant Radiohead's Creep. So scratch that. I can't remember STP's Creep off of the top of my head, so I won't say whether or not it's grunge.
