Of All Time... (read first post)

Post by TheKorovaMilkbar » Sun Jan 02, 2005 4:55 am

This thread is about your opinion on what in music is "the best." Best singer, drummer, band, tour, concert, etc. Have fun, keep it civil, and try to limit yourself to one listing per type (in other words list the one best singer instead of the three best). This is not a contest or bash fest. If a fight breaks out I will ask the mods to lock this thread in an instant... Capiche?

I will start it off:

Best Band- Led Zeppelin or Pink Floyd (Sorry, but I can't even decide between the two)
Best Drummer- Joey Jordison of Slipknot (I don't even listen to them that much but this man is amazing)
Best Vocalist- Dee Snider
Best Soundtrack- Resident Evil (without a doubt THE BEST soundtrack ever)

Best Band: Judas Priest. Not my favorite, but definitely the Best. As far as I'm concerned, more the fathers of metal than Black Sabbath. People will disagree with me, and I can respect Sabbath as the Fathers of Metal, but I personally think they were like the husband of the cheating whore, and Priest was the mailman who fathered the child. Hard, considering Halfords sexual preference though... He's a Metal Daddy.

Best Vocals:
Female: Loreena McKennitt. Her voice is so... beautiful. I was tempted to go with Tarja Turunen from Nightwish, but she has the fact that she can sing Operatic vocals REALLY REALLY well. Outside of that, she's just above average, and certianly not 'the best.'
Male: Rob Halford (Judas Priest, Halford)
Rough: Kral (Mercenary)

Best Guitarist: Michael Romeo (Symphony X). No contest. Hands down. This man is GREAT.

Best Bassist: I never really paid much attention to Bass playing before these past 2 years when I started listening to metal which caused me to take more than a passing interest in music overall. For this reason, I will go with Marco Hietala (Nightwish)

Best Keyboardist: Tuomas Holopainen (Nightwish). I've seen a lot of bands play that rely heavily on keyboard, and most of the keyboardists really are just kind of there as filler and while they play, they really don't seem to be .. 'in the band'. They're off, playing, but normally, you can't hear their contributions to the music, and if they weren't there, you woudln't know it. Tuomas IS Nightwish. The other members are as well, but I have never ever seen a more passionate keyboardist who has such a presence in a band. I suppose I should mention his skill is phenominal too.

Best Drummer: This one is tough. I want to say Thomen Stauch (Blind Guardian) because he's incredibly talented and definitely in my top 5 drummers. He is absolutely incredible and plays like he has 6 arms. I want to say Jukka Nevalainen (Nightwish) not only because I'm a Nightwish whore, but because he truely is my favorite drummer, and in my mind, the BEST drummer I've ever had the pleasure of listening to, but really, it all comes back to Mike Portnoy (several). look at the mans drum set. I've had the pleasure see all 3 of these fine men play. I've seen Jukka 6 times. He absolutely leaves me breathless with his drumming every time, but Portony blew me away.

Best Songwriter/Lyrisist
: Eminem. I don't feel the need to justify this. The fact that I'm mentioning a rapper in ANY position should be all the justification ANYONE needs.
Ploink! Magic Cupcake! Elvenking. I'm sorry, I can't hear you over how awesome I am.

Props to mr. Nailz for a rather tasteful list!

I'll drop the "Best" pretense, and go with favourites. Apologies if my list sounds a little skewed...

Favourite Band: King Crimson

If you consider it to be a band, then I think the result speaks for itself. 36 years, 13 albums, and over 90 official releases of style-shifting greatness. We are unlikely to see them tour again, unfortunately, but there's still hope left for new music. From avant-jazz to classic rock to very gothy-sounding-metal-type stuff, to prog-pop-rock, to world-music influenced electronica, to midi-guitar, loop-rich weirdnesses, to burning solos and multiple drummers. Everything, on a top level of excellence.

If you don't consider them to be a band, then I'll narrow it down to King Crimson '72-'74, followed closely by King Crimson '99-'03.

If I had to call a "Most Talented I Heard" band category or something though, I'd have to name Gentle Giant. Their sense of style, mixing rock with English Renaissance music, and their incredible multi-instrument talents never failed to impress me.

Favourite Vocalist and Lyricist:

A four-way tie for me:
Captain Beefheart vs. Peter Gabriel vs. David Sylvian vs. Freddy Mercury

Closer to the left, the advantage leans more heavily on the lyrics, not to undermine the voice... still, too tough a call for me to decide straightforwardly.

Favourite Guitarist: Robert Fripp
Do I even need to talk about this guy again?
You can really hear the difference when you listen to him for a while. He's not your typical guitarist, and everything he does is madness based on extreme sense of sufficiency, discipline and taste.

Outside the world of rock, corny as it might sound, my father is my favourite guitarist. But trusting in my ability to listen to music critically, I can honestly say he's the best acoustic/classical guitarist I have yet heard, and perhaps ever will. A shame he may never be widely known.

Favourite Bassist: John Wetton
For his playing in King Crimson '72 - '74, this guy was the ultimate free-spirit bottom-end skull-crusher. Before I heard him, actually, I didn't really know bass existed. Well, I knew there was the instrument, but frankly, I never even had an idea what its' role was and what it sounded like, save for an occasional low note. This guy really opened my eyes in a big way.

However, of bassists currently playing, Tony Levin takes the cake. Wetton had since had a bit too much alcohol and has nearly dropped playing bass altogether.

Favourite Drummer Pat Mastelotto

I'm not actually a huge expert in drums, but I love this guy's heavy-handed style, and ingenious taste in mixing acoustic and electronic, and using loops and beat boxes not to do the job for him, but as intricate instruments to play with. Seeing him live, managing upwards of 6 different loops/beat boxes in perfect time, while continuing to play himself, was enough to convince me. He's not a player to mess with.

As conventional drummers go, I'm yet to hear anyone approach ol' Bill Bruford.

Favourite Multi-Instrumentalist and Experimental Musician: Adrian Belew

I somehow feel bad without mentioning Ade. The man who recorded an album of orchestral music (that actually sounds bang-on like orchestral music) with a guitar. The man who can play at least 3 roles simultanously live on occasion. The man who does drums, guitar, viola, keyboards, vocals, and writes a ton of his own music and lyrics. And he's still the best noisemaker on guitar. He can pull more unusual and wacky sounds out of a guitar with the aid of little but his hands and an amp than anyone I know of.
The Birds are using humanity in order to throw something terrifying at this green pig. And then what happens to us all later, that’s simply not important to them…
