Nightwish related lyrical discovery.

Post by Moonlight Soldier » Mon May 31, 2004 8:54 pm

Ok, So I admit, I was basically clueless as to what Tarja (methinks that's her name IIRC) actually says whilst singing. For the longest time I listened to some sample mp3s of Nightwish and just loved the sound, never actually understanding the words.

So I go HMV the other day, and I pick up Wishmaster. Very Nice! I like. I also check the jacket and discover to my pleasure the lyrics.

So as I glance through, I come to Wishmaster and actually read the lyrics.

Suddenly Realization STRIKES! Dragonlance.

I know they use Lord of the Rings in other songs as well. Are there any other fantasy goodness that you know about used by Nightwish that may peek my interest?

I'm curious now as to what else they draw on.

I personally like both the sound and lyrics of "Dead Boy's Poem". Very, VERY good song. Nailz made an AMV using it, very well done also.

They have some great lyrics, haven't read them all yet though... I usually read them while listening to the song...

Ok, so sure it's just shameless promotion, but I recently just put up a nightwish vid using Wishmaster as the song, and Bastard as the anime (link in sig).

Anyways . . . speaking of Wishmaster, I was really wondering where the rest of that song was coming from. I saw the lord of the rings references, but as to the rest of it, I had no idea. It's nice to know now. Thanks Moonlight!

And yes, she is rather hard to understand, but their sound is awesome.

Hmm nifty...

/uses your post of the lyrics

Master!
Apprentice!
Heartborne, 7th Seeker
Warrior!
Disciple!
In me the Wishmaster
Elbereth
Lorien

A dreamy-eyed child staring into night
On a journey to storyteller`s mind
Whispers a wish speaks with the stars the words are silent in him
Distant sigh from a lonely heart
"I`ll be with you soon, my Shalafi"
Grey Havens my destiny
Master!...
Silvara
Starbreeze
Sla-Mori the one known only by Him

To august realms, the sorcery within
If you hear the call of arcane lore,
Your world shall rest on Earth no more
A maiden elf calling with her cunning song
"Meet me at the Inn of Last Home"
Heartborne will find the way!
Master!...
Wishmaster
Crusade for Your will
A child, dreamfinder
The Apprentice becoming...
Master

With all those references to Dragonlance, it shows how little I could understand of her. And I'm a big Dragonlance fan, I read it and did a "OMFG It's RAISTLIN!"

/shall download Tsunami's vid.

Elvenpath is another song they base a lot of fantasy on.

Moonlight, that song is a cross between Dragonlance and Tolkien. Elbereth and Lorien are definately not Dragonlance. On the other hand, 'Shalafi' I think was a word used to mean 'Master' by Raistlin's student Dalamar. But.... What do the Grey Havens have to do with Dragonlance?

Methinks Nightwish has their fantasy literature all mixed up.

Or they just wanted to combine them for some strange reason . . .

I hope it's confusion. THere's no good reason to want to combine Tolkien and Dragonlance.

oh god, shut up. It's a combination of fantasy worlds... look at the lyrics for Elvenpath:

Elvenpath

(In the sheltering shade of the forest
Calling calming silence
Accompanied only by the full moon
The howling of a night wolf
And the path under my bare feet...
...The Elvenpath)

Hearing music from the deepest forest
Songs as a seduction of sirens
The elf-folk is calling me

Tapio, Bear-king, Ruler of the forest
Mielikki, Bluecloak, Healer of the ill and sad
Open the gate and let me follow the uncarven path

The way to the lands
Where as a hero I stand
The path where Beauty met the Beast
Elvenpath
It's the honesty of these worlds
Ruled by magic and mighty swords
That makes my soul long for the past
Elvenpath

The moonwitch took me to a ride on a broomstick
Introduced me to her old friend home gnome
Told me to keep the sauna warm for him

At the grove I met the rest - the folk of my fantasies
Bilbo, Sparhawk, goblins and pixies
Snowman, Willow, trolls and the seven dwarves
The path goes forever on

The way to the lands...

As I return to my room
And as sleep takes me by my hand
Madrigals from the woods
Carry me to neverland
In this spellbound night
The world's an elvish sight
In this spellbound night
The world's an elvish sight

OMG THEY COMBINED GENERAL FANTASY WITH A SHITLOAD OF STORIES, GOD THEY SUCK ASS AND ARE STUPID.
