Sonata Arctica

Post by akatoro » Tue Aug 13, 2002 1:42 pm

A finnish band, guitarist comes from In Flames he has also played a little in Sinergy. Drummer's from In Flames as well. Sonata Arctica often plays together with Nightwish as well. If you haven't heard them I can recommend them.

For those of you who haven't heard of these other bands, they play metal.
Sort of symphonic metal, I don't know. I love 'em a lot and I can recommend their CD 'Silence'

Some good songs are:
The Power of One
The Last Chapter
Full Moon
Last Drop Falls
San Sebastian (revisited)
amongst others.

I personally love the whole album 'Silence' and have found to my surprise that some of the songs fit quite well with some animes I've watched lately.
Love Hina, Neon genesis Evangelion and Berserk to name a few.

Please tell me what you think about them if you take the time to listen to them :D They're well worth it.

Hmm, I'm more of a Children Of Bodom fan myself. Good, pleasant Finnish black metal.
I'm out...

Sonata Artica = Finnish Cheese. I love those guys. They fucking rock hard. Love em. If you like Sonata Artica, try out Elvenking.

Some better songs by SA = full moon, Kingdom for a heart, Replica, My land.

Ahh yes, another one of those rare finds I came across after Nightwish. ANd despite their constant comparison to Stratovarius, I think they are much better. They are an exceptionally talented (and young) band.

A couple songs from their debut album, Ecliptica, that really stand out are 'My Land' and 'Kingdom for a Heart'. The ballad 'Shy' from Successor is beautifully subtle. . . . Of Silence has a good balance of songs but they don't have the same kind of impact the first album had, it sounds almost like more of the same, but still generally good.

BTW, those three songs are the only ones I can ever envision making a good AMV out of - just can't find the right anime for them.

Sonata Artica is cheese. Plain and Simple. Silence Sucked, even more simple than the last statement. I love it though, it's so terrible it's good. The lyrics, oh my god the lyrics. "Oh, I love you, maybe!" - I love you, MAYBE? Good god. "Now that I've found the whore in you why cant I tell you no?" Rotfl - This is just one song.

I've gotta give the cd credit, there are 2 generally good songs: Sing in Silence, and Revontulet are very sweet. and Revontulet is probably one of the best instrumentals I've heard.

Don't get me wrong, S.A. rocks, and Eliptica rules. Tony's got a LOT of talent, and I do like his singing voice, the music is incredible, but they lyrics just kill it for them on Silence.

yeah I admit some words are a little.. Weird to say the least.
But all in all I'm willing to overlook that. God, I didn't really listen to them when I got the CD back in Nov, but now I find myself humming their songs in the most intimate moments.. Which reminds me, I'm gonna go have one now. These Hentai games are just too much.

Most of Sonata Arctica's stuff is iffy, and varies from form to form. Example: the official video for "The Wolf And The Raven" sucks hard. However, the song is decent, and the guitar solo is fucking amazing. I couldn't play that fast if I grew another two hands to fret and pick while tapping.

I didn't think any In Flames guitarists are/were in the band. I don't recall Bjorn or Glenn having any side projects (well, besides Dimension Zero for Glenn, but that's his band now that he's been out of IF), but I can never keep track of Jesper; he did a brief stint in Sinergy (I think on bass, which is what he does now for Dimension Zero).

kthulhu and nailz are right. There are better bands from Finland. Might I also suggest Sentenced (imho still the best, _TCWL_ rules, lots of good seeds for videos), Darkwoods My Betrothed even though nobody's heard from them in a while, or Finntroll if you're into really weird stuff? Black metal meets polka, crazy but pretty neat.

@Kai: 1. You didn't like the video for wolf and raven? I did. 2. YOU'VE ACTUALLY HEARD OF FINNTROLL!? hehe, they're amazing. get their cd.

@Kuzutetsu: Blind Guardian has been around for over 14 years. Rhapsody has been around for less. I dont think it's fair to say "BG may become like Rhapsody" even if it IS the dumbest thing I've ever heard. Blind Guardian doesn't need to say kings, dragons, wizards in every song. =p
