Who else is sick of NEW ROCK?

Post by RamonesFan2020204 » Sat Aug 16, 2003 4:26 pm

I know I am. Alot of today's rock bands are total garbage. Rock and roll hardly had any bad acts... But then NIRVANA came along, and KILLED rock. It's their fault that rock isn't as good as it was back then. There are hardly any good rock bands today that are good (eg Sugar Ray, Blink 182, The Goo Goo Dolls, Pantera, some others), but alot of them suck. And there's this fucking stupid satanic rock (Marilyn Manson, Slipknot, Coal Chamber, Tool, Fear Factory) that are waste of musical talent. I remember those 80s metal bands who always sang about Chillin' wit da honeys and gettin' laid. Now rock is just about depression and suicide and other crap. We need some more old rock (AC/DC, Motley Crue, Bon Jovi, Def Leppard, Pink Floyd, Foreigner, Whitesnake, Poison, Ratt, Winger, Stryper, Journey, Mr. Big, Night Ranger, Loverboy, Bachman Turner Overdrive, Megadeth, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Sammy Hagar, The Cult, Yes, David Foster, etc), and less of this satanic/goth shit (Manson, Tool, Slipknot, Coal Chamber, Fear Factory, etc.) So who agrees with me????

You seem to mis-classify some of the music. A lot of it isn't really related.

What is waste of musical talent?

Personally, I dislike bands like Blink 192 for lack thereof, but respect Tool and Fear Factory for actually having some. Although I don't like Marilyn Manson or Slipknot.

Old bands - basically, what you're calling for is a conservative/reactionary trend in music. Though I love quite a few of the old bands, I'm primarily interested in those which are progressive and continuously push the envelope.

So, while I like Yes' music quite a bit more than Tool's, I'm far more supportive of what Tool is doing. Because yes is basiclly stalled, musically not moving forward in the last few years and occupied primaly by retro-rock performance. Which isn't bad, but far from progressive.
I remember those 80s metal bands who always sang about Chillin' wit da honeys and gettin' laid. Now rock is just about depression and suicide and other crap.
First off, that's not true. Secondly, You're just thinking of mainstream tendencies. Thirdly, that's just unimaginative: I don't know about you, but with me - music that doesn't challenge is of no interest to me, and stuff that's about 'chillin' is certainly not a challenge to my intellect. Nor do I find any of it to be in resonance with what I think. But, if that's what you want - by all means.

But again, I'm almost as skeptical about current mainstream tendencies as I am about those of the past. But, dig beneath the surface and you always find what you've been seeking. On the surface, chewy crap is always usually abound and afloat... However, there are some exceptions, as always.

I can't hate Fear Factory...they gave me Genetic Blueprint...That song is so much fun to drive to on a curvy Ohio backroad.

I prefer older rock probably because I grew up listening to it. You have the scorpions' (rock you like a hurricane :D ) journey, and the music on the dazed and confused album is a nice, albeit small, collection of oldies but goodies.

On the other hand, music goes through changes. If you didn't have what came before, you may not ever get something really good that is just around the bend. No one is ever going to take away the good ol' rock and you wouldn't want to listen to the same style (or same thing) forever anyway. You can go back in time as far as you want and use that to pacify your ears through this...time of beeps and moans they call music :?

Dude, STRYPER?!

Anyhow, the problem with a lot of rock today can be summed up in one word: cliche. Nirvana started the "moody rock" genre. Nine Inch Nails helped start the "moody industrial" genre (well, make it big, at least). Both pretty much suck, in my book (I've never been a big fan of either).

Now, it's considered essential to be emotionally deep lyrically, and let the music come afterwards. Why? Because, this makes money. It gives artistic "credibility" so that lazy people can artifically feel good about buying.

The ultimate problem is that many people like being told what to think. "This band is cool, until this other one here becomes cool. Don't like that genre? We have another, different one you can like!" seems to be the message and the order of the day. Since it's so easy to do, people happily lockstep into roles. musically and otherwise.

The best thing to do: seek out as much music (preferably non-mainstream) as you can, and try to introduce other people to it. Look overseas. Look around locally. And diversify as much as possible.

Then you will find true happiness. Who cares if you like, say, Duran Duran , Metal Church and Ministry AND happy Jpop? Only single minded, foolish morons, that's who!

As for "gothic" music:

Don't worry about Marilyn Manson. He's a gimmick, the pseudo-industrial guy who made it big. He'll have his fame, he'll have his footnote, but he won't have the timelessness of more genuine industrial artists and groups like KMFDM, Ministry, Front 242, or Pig. People in the future won't say "Oh, I was inspired by Marilyn Manson".

His ride is almost over, and he has contributed relatively little to truly stand out.

And not all gothic music is like Marilyn Manson. A lot of it is more poppy than dark and hard - just not syrupy poppy.
I'm out...

im not touching this topic with a 3 foot stick .. only thing i wanted to toss in was ... how could you even try to compare Blink 182 to nirvana?!

On my playlist now i have some Ac\Dc Pink floyd and iron maiden, Rammstein, Union underground, Metallica, Ozzy Disturbed, Godsmack, Pm5K, Red Hot chilli peppers, Rob zombie, Manson, as well as a shitload of Punk (Rufio, Greenday, NoFX, Ramones) rap and techno ... so instead of bitching about how nirvana killed the rock star .. Drop some dough on a couple of random cd's or get a P2P proggy. im sure there is a shitload of music out there for someone as misguided as you are, Drop the prejudices and give new things a listen.. either that or crawl back into your hole with your tapes and Vinyls and stop complaining.
...the problem I see a lot is that many good amv makers think they suck, and many bad amv makers think they're good.
I've seen it happen, man! I've SEEN IT!..

Rock & Roll died when Disco brought out-of-the-closet and on to the dance floor to life T_T

Alice Cooper has a rhaspy voice, but at no time did he ever get in-your face with the microphone!

Bob Segar and the Eagles designed their music to cross the line between Rock and Country ( which is very very tough to do! )

Heart and Pink Floyd were always breaking new ground in Full Metal Impact
( but never in their wildest dreams would they ever concider making love to the microphone with their tonge stuck to their right inside cheek - like Kreed! )

Boston, Brownsville Station and The Beatles had fun with the way they could get their Guitars to sound
( anyone remember who released "Smoking in the Boys Room" before everyone stole that song ? )

One Hit Wonders - makes you kinda think about what they Really could have done; if they had tryed! ( Fancy's - Wild Thing! )

Joan Jet & Pat Benitar would have made one heck of a Rock Band - yeah! 8)

Before everyone goes bashing Blink-182, something to keep in mind.

Blink-182 is not rock, they're pop-punk.

They shouldn't even be in this thread.

Oh fuck.

You did not just tell me that you fucking don't like a certain type of music.

Well good for you.

Why do people give a shit about the genre of their music or what it's called or even who makes it? It's music, you listen to it because you like the music, if you don't like it, you don't. It's a very simple concept.

Now either you just have no taste in music, or you're extremely ignorant of different types of music.

And really, how is it so hard to NOT listen to the music that you don't like? I don't like The Spice Girls, so now I'm going to immerse myself in all things Spice Girls. I love making sense like that. You're complaining like it's going to do anything, like someone or some cosmic force is going to say 'OMG PEOPLE HATE THIS MUSIC' and will somehow smite all the people making the offending music.

Dismissing a certain style of music will indefinately block you out from certain styles or bands that you indeed do like.

It's all music in the end.

NO I CAN'T LISTEN TO OR LIKE THAT MUSIC BECAUSE IT IS RAP/PUNK/ROCK/ELECTRONIC/AMBIENT AND I HATE ALL MUSIC THAT IS RAP/PUNK/ROCK/ELECTRONIC/AMBIENT!!!!

This episode of Iron Chef is pissing me off with all it's baseball references. EAT YOUR FUCKING TURKEY YOU ASSHOLES.
