That song is the preview/trailer for X you may be talking about is actually a music video called 'X2'.
Produced in 1993 (3 years before the X movie debuted) by Madhouse (VHD: Bloodlust, Ninja Scroll, Trigun), this video served as a slick and visually stunning way to introduce new people to the world of X/1999 and X-Japan.

The song used in the video, 'X', was written by a very popular JRock band also under the name X in 1989 (which changed their name to X-Japan in 1992 because they werent having much of a success in America and that there already existed an LA based punk group called 'X' )

The version in X2 is just under 3 minutes in length, while the full version is 6 minutes.

Another song that was used in anime by them was 'Forever Love', which played during the ending credits of the X movie.
