I've had 2 laptops stolen so far. The first one was a POS, at the end of it's life, but I had an xbox controller and my PS2 mouse (you know, the one that came with the PS2 Linux Dev Kit) in the bag at the time. Very annoying. The 2nd one I had stolen right from under my nose when I was at the school. It had my dice, another xbox controller, and as far as data was concerned, some stuff for a BESM campaign I was running that I hadn't backed up anywhere yet.
The first one I was more devastated by the loss of the mouse as it was the only extra USB mouse I had, it was nice and small perfect for mobile use, and it cost me $200 (well, the kit was $200 that it came in.) PC was at the end of it's life.
The 2nd one I was extremely annoyed that it had even been stolen. I had just bought it 2 months back. Lost some BESM info which was sad as well as my dice (I miss them so much) and yet another controller. I filled a police report, got money from insurance to cover the laptop, and bought a model number higher for the same price. In the end it turned out ok, but I was seriously annoyed none-the-less.
As far as data is concerned, I generally keep it backed up. I tend to sync my laptop to my desktop quite often so I don't really need to worry about loosing data from the laptop being stolen. But yeah, I've lost projects before due to other annoyances, such as click of death.... So I feel your pain.
