Surprisingly, this was pretty decent. Not much technobabble. Had the action/fun feel of TOS instead of the psychological profile feel of TNG. Didn't require knowing tons of trek background. And, most amusingly, Kirk's dad had a more heroic death than Kirk did. There were some 'give me a fucking break' moments, as is always the case with Trek, but overall the movie was far better than I expected.
Spoiler :
I like that the big bad undefeatable enemy ship was just a typical mining ship with nothing really special about it. The red glop doesn't count, that had nothing to do with why it easily bested the Star Fleet ships. TNG Enterprise probably could have destroyed the thing before the opening credits started. Showing hundreds of years of technical improvement like that without having a 10 minutes speech beating the point into the ground was a nice touch. To bad they decided to drive the 'alternate universe' point into the ground like they did, but at least even that didn't take up a lot of time.

I also liked the way time travel was dealt with. It was NOT to visit 20th century earth. It was NOT to have TOS and TNG characters in the same movie to give fans orgasms. It was not some scifi technobabble wet dream. It actually didn't get that much focus, sure it was important to the story but the time travel wasn't the entire point of the story. The only other time I think trek did time travel this well was TNG series finale

After having seen it a 4th time I think I can say the movie was really good and can save future viewings until the DVD/BD comes out.
Spoiler :
Did anyone else notice that during the conversation between Kirk and Scotty when they are stuck in the gravity well at the end of the movie that they thought Scotty said 'Captian Picard'? I did. I had to grab a clip of that spot and play it back a few times in succession in order to allow my brain to hear what was actually said.

Awesome movie. Big fan.

At the bar in the beginning, the menu has a Cardassian drink. Humanity hasn't made contact with them yet.

Yea, I noticed that also but then again, it is an alternate timeline so maybe they have?

Oh yea, did anyone notice the editing error near the end of the movie?
Spoiler :
Near the end while Kirk and Spock are on the romulan ship. Kirk jumps to a platform but ends up hanging off the edge... then one of the romulans comes and picks him up. This is where kirk does the whole "I have your gun" bit. After shooting him and falling back down, you see the gun drop to the ground.

If you look, you'll see that the blaster was already on the ground before the romulan comes into scene...

Spoiler :
Well, the deviation started when Kirk's dad made contact with the Romulans, so I guess some weird alteration to the timeline COULD HAVE caused humans to encounter Cardassians sooner, but chances are, probably not.

I didn't see that one. However,
Spoiler :
was there one after kirk and sulu are teleported while falling? They break the transporter-thing, but isn't it instantly repaired when you see it next? (I could be wrong; only seen it once)

Spoiler :
You can hear it break, but I've yet to see anything break when they land. Maybe I just missed it both times I saw it, even though I was looking for it the second time around.
