Whoops, somehow missed this.

Yes, a main reason for the preference of locking to deletion (which, around here, is synonymous with "moving out of sight of non-mod/admins") is the deterrent factor. At least from what I've gathered from previous discussion about it.
You're assuming of course that the noobs have the desire or even the capability to read them. Pretty bold assumption to make.

I'm at least glad my thread inspired a little bit of discussion and whatnot. :)

Agreed.
Most noobs or just members in general don't take the time to read announcements or "stickies".
Sadly in most cases this deterrence factor is pointless.
Also, indeed Bebi, nice little discussion we're having here...

Yeah.... wtf is that all about? Shouldn't the mods like, say that they've removed posts because of such-and-such a reason? Seems a little fascist if they just delete shit with no warning. What next, are they reading our PM inboxes? :?

They'll delete your post...its a conspiracy.
Also Bebi, don't give them ideas. :?

If it were me I would include the rules in the confirmation email in big bold lettering.
And they would have to sing a contract that states that they read the rules and should they break then they can be banned instantly.

Well, unlikely senario, but I can't help but think it the route to go...

In the healthcare industry, quarterly, I have to do federally mandated e-modules... page after page of "one concept an hour" nonsense.

It would seem making the noobs go through the Registration Agreement Terms in this manner really drives the main points home. Well, very unlikely to occur, we all have our hopes.

I should probably post on this, so I am.

The posts were removed because they were offtopic/spamish (things about pies and voodo). Well, most of them at least. For some reason, it looks like there were one or two that got caught that weren't spam or off-topic. This was an accident, and for this, I'm sorry and I apologize (I would have posted myself to get their text back in, but I didn't realize it until I looked through the moved posts after checking back in on this today). We generally don't leave messages for removing spam and such (well me personally, I can't say for everyone else) is because I want the conversation to get back on track, and posting a note saying that posts were moved isn't helping that (that and the fact that many people don't mind when spam has been removed).

As for the people that post about downloading music, it's their decision to read the rules or not. And many do. The ones that don't however, are the only ones that we actually get to see.

And Bebi, I can definitely say that we do not go through people's PM boxes. For one, we can't. And even if we could, I wouldn't want to. People are entitled to their privacy.

Indeed.
It would be basically the most rigid way to ensure the reading of rules but sometimes I do believe it's the only way to go.

Oh well, life's hell in a forum.

Well that's good to hear - apparently the MODs at the HP roleplaying site http://www.hogwarts-online.org seem to think that they are justified in going through people's PM inboxes. I think that's rather unfair and whats worse, is not only did they say this, they basically said "Theres nothing at all you can do about it." Surely that can't be right.

Meh anyway, back on-topic - The whole idea of my ....uh..... idea.... :? was to try and weed out the people who aren't reading the rules or otherwise paying attention to the way things are going on in here. I dunno. It was just an idea, anyway.

Wow quoting is awesome.

Seriously, if you don't need every single one of those quotantions, don't use them. And you don't need them, because most of them have already been quoted at least once already. It gets annoying scrolling through a page that's 3/4 quotation.
