And these people don't know crap. Probably the same people that say Tool is prog-metal. Then again Tool seems to think that of itself, which would explain why they played with King Crimson.
Tool is not prog. Tool is not math metal. Spiral Architect on the other hand......

Then what is Tool? You seem to know all the answers. I don't care what you want to call Spiral Architect. Genre wars are stupid. You don't know everything.

I've always thought of Tool as Prog Rock. They're so much different than anything else out there that I've ever caught a wiff of, and I've heard a LOT. There are definite mathimatical influences in Tools work.

Prog is short for progressive. To Progress. 99.9% of bands do this in idiotic stupid horrible sounding ways. I've got a CD sample from ProgPower IV full of Prog Metal that would make you want to cut out your ears.

Die Toten Hosen, as far as http://www.allmusic.com is concerned. They are really good, by the way.
Amen would also fall under that.
You should also check out Pailhead, a one-shot side project between Ministry and Fugazi. Or maybe Lard, a side project between Ministry and the Dead Kennedys. Or just Ministry. They're cool no matter what you normally listen to (with the exception of that 1995-2000 period of crap).
If nothing else, harsh noises get your attention.

There's this one guy I know from another board who insists that everything today that's called emo is absolutely not, is instead just pop-punk. An example he gives of real emo is the band Moss Icon. I don't know if he's right or not, but I do know that Moss Icon kiss the collective asses of every band I've heard that's popularly considered emo.

Yeah, subgenres suck. But they can be good for approximations. They just get f'n annoying whenever a genre dispute arises.
