As someone that does NOT play competitively, Brawl is the far more entertaining game to me, especially with online play added. That being said, I still had/have fun with meele, which I liked better single-player, because it didn't have the fecking bullshit single player "story". Good try, but I don't play games like Brawl for a story. I play them so I can beat the ever loving shit out of Princess Peach.

Also, as a Mother fanboy, having Lucas in Brawl was the biggest $*%#-slap in our faces. %#$@ you NINTENDO!

I only say Brawl > Melee because I didn't have the chance to play Melee as often.

i mean, i guess because it was so new and cool and innovative, but melee improved on SSB in like every way.

I suppose it's the nostalgia goggles talking, but yeah, I think the first one's the best. I suppose my opinion would differ if I had more of a chance to play Melee more than I actually did.

64 version > melee > brawl

64 version: Falcon infinite up aerials, better (and funnier) smash attacks, taunt canceling, more 0-to-death combos, every character was equally master-able.
Melee: Falcon knee, better physics, fancier combos, Marth, wave-dashing, moonwalking, more glitch kills, toned-down items.
Brawl: Tripping, floating like a freakin feather, falco infinite ground hit lasers, Pit arrow spam, SLOW, stupid and cheap final smashes.

The game progressively got less intricate over the years. I say intricate because the creators of the game intended for it to be not a competitive game, but a casual game meant to be fun for all instead of free-for-all. So technically, the game did not get worse by definition, but less competitive. I personally like the 64 version better than any of the others.
