Eyes never leave the laptop in public. If they do leave the laptop for some specific reason, my hands are on it.
"The people cannot be [...] always, well informed. The part which is wrong will be discontented, in proportion to [...] the facts they misconceive. If they remain quiet under such misconceptions, it is lethargy, the forerunner of death to public liberty. What country can preserve its liberties, if it's rulers are not warned [...] that this people preserve the spirit of resistance? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time, with the blood of patriots and tyrants."-Thomas Jefferson

I remember the week that Windows 7 came out. A friend of my mom gave me her broken laptop to keep, so I replaced the hard drive, upgraded the memory, and bought a copy of Windows 7 for it (cost me about $300). Then somebody broke into my house while I was gone and stole it along with my PS2, camcorder, and probably a bunch of stuff that I still don't even know about. I hope that asshole die of cancer.

O rly. There's so much the police can do after they've stolen your precious desktop. So, let me give you another piece of advice! :D

Hunt the burglar. And then

I'd venture a guess that someone would probably steal a lot more than just a desktop if they broke in to rob the place. The added cost in penalty if they're caught for each item isn't really measurable (unless they take something like a gun).

Still, there's a better chance that he would be spotted by someone wielding my huge case and 17" monitor than a tiny laptop :>

My important data and projects are backed up on a personal file server and off-site (yes, in The Cloud). My laptop's internal storage is encrypted.

Loss of a laptop would be an extremely irritating financial hit -- I probably would not replace it immediately -- but I would not lose very much data. I am more worried about someone finding a weakness in the operating system's encryption or my usage thereof which would expose personal data, leading to far more severe consequences, e.g. identity theft.
