70s influence, newer music - suggestions?

Post by SarahtheBoring » Fri Jun 03, 2005 11:06 pm

Okay, so, perhaps it's all in my head, but there seems to be a minor fad of 70s influences (funk and disco catch my attention in particular) in some new music. And I like it. So I hope it's not entirely in my head.

Most obvious example: the Gorillaz's (that doesn't look right) "Feel Good Inc." On the disco side, we have Junior Senior and Scissor Sisters. I've also heard a little from 33Hz and Chromeo, both funk-influenced. DDR has featured a smattering of reworked songs from that era over the years, too.

So. What else should I check out in this vein? I mean the quasi-newer stuff, not the original genre ('cause that's easy to find). Please keep the "omg this sux" to yourselves, because I'm not going to stop being a sucker for this junk no matter how hard you scoff at me, thank you.

Any leads are appreciated. Thanks in advance.

...and no, this isn't an old-person thing; both genres were around before I was born. I grew up in the era when Madonna sang "Borderline." :?

Thomas Bangaltar's work is heavily disco -- you probably know him already, but I'll throw his name out there anyway. Some common aliases: Daft Punk (collaboration with Guy-Manuel de Homem Christo), Stardust, Together, Colossus.

Alan Braxe and Fred Falke's single "Rubicon" is also very disco-ey, and quite good to boot. Actually, I think nearly anything by Alan Braxe or Fred Falke would fit the category.

The Seatbelts' "What planet is this?!" brings back the old big-band sound (I dunno, this may be a bit older than the 70s -- probably like 20s-30s, but...ah well.)

(Almost) anything by Eric Prydz works :P

Nope, don't know him already. (C'mon, I'm Super-Mainstream Woman.)

Thanks!

The only new thing in the vein of '70s music, I know of, is Russell Allen's Atomic Soul which is heavily influenced by rock bands of the 70's - and it shows! So much so that it is a complete departure from the usual Progressive Metal stuff he sings with Symphony X.

You can listen to samples @ Melodic Rock & RockReport.

I second this. Like a million times. So I second million this or something. However, as Rubyeye states, it is more rock/blues influenced; it is not funk or disco.

Russell Allen has been my favorite vocalist for about four years.

I knew I used the wrong subject line. Sigh. I meant those genres specifically, but people took it all wrong. My bad.

Thanks - I'm not really interested in... uh, can I say this without getting killed? I'm not really interested in metal. I am lukewarm to prog rock, though. Hm.

Thanks!

No, we got it, if you'd read our posts. That's why I was sure to say that what Rubyeye was suggesting is not funk or disco. I think he was just trying to be helpful with what he knows about; same as I was. Russell Allen's side project is not metal, it is 70s-influenced rock/blues even though it is still new music. It's not even prog rock (ala Rush and Yes).

I'd recommend more funk/disco new bands but I really don't know of any. Sorry to waste your time.

Jamiroquai has a new album coming out in two weeks. I've heard one song off of it, and it might be what you're looking for (It was in my LJ a while back). All of their older stuff is great, if you haven't listened to it.

I would have suggested 33Hz, but you've already heard them. I think you'd like Modjo as well. They had a fairly popular dance hit with Lady (Hear Me Tonight). Cassius is pretty bad ass, too, as is Les Rythmes Digitales.

If you want to hear samples, go to Amazon.com and search for the artist.

Also, This site is cool.

Sheesh, Flint, kinda pissy there. I'm sorry that my tastes don't line up with yours (god forbid), and I already apologized for not using the right subject line. If you'd both read my post you'd know that's not what I was looking for - but I appreciate your effort, honestly. I was trying to be nice rather than say "YO, TRY READING MY POST THX."

Oh well.

Thanks, guys. I'm kinda sorry I posted this. I knew I shouldn't have started posting again. :? Sorry for "wasting your time."
