I was watching vh1's most awesomely bad videos and lo and behold who would be 1st but uber l337 Synth meisters Europe with their "Final Countdown"..while they were interviewing people about the vid the #1 complaint was that there was a synthesizer and synthesizers have no place in metal "where's metallica" -"omg iron maiden should kick their ass" "I'm afraid of my inner homosexuality" etc...etc...
then I realized that almost all of my favorite bands use a synth and I never sat down and questioned their holy Metalness
so, without any rude flamy remarks about which band sucks and which one doesn't, who here enjoys a little synth before breakfast and who doesn't...and why

vh1 shows are washed-up metrosexuals (comedians? fashion artists??) who have nothing else to do than notice a nuance of a celebrity and try to make 200 jokes out of that nuance. then the editors of the show play pop songs in the background so tv viewers watch them.
synthesizers are awesome when used well.

King Crimson, the guitar synth pioneers, and still arguably the only first-line band to use MIDI guitars effectively.
Robert Fripp virtually never uses a non-synth sound nowadays, producing everything from distorted solos to ambient soundscapes with its' assistance.
Whoever questions synth needs to hear some top-level musicians using it.

The Birds are using humanity in order to throw something terrifying at this green pig. And then what happens to us all later, that’s simply not important to them…

I just think VH1 Hates Europe. Personally, VH1 is under the impression that symphony work has no place in metal either, but one only has to take a general listen to metal bands recently to realise that truely that is not the case. Something like 8 of the 10 tracks on Once were performed with a 64 piece symphony. Metalica's S&M, and other bands have Symphony emulations.
As for Synth.. synth is not the same as keyboards and should definitely be used sparingly, and if used, used WELL. Over-synth should stay locked away in the 80's. The sound quality has definitely improved as well as the range, and as for a prime example of just enough, I'd suggest listening to Nightwish's cover of "Deep Crimson Sea".
