Ishkur's Guide to Electronic Music

Ishkur's Guide to Electronic Music

It's difficult to describe this: kind of a timeline or map of electronica along with commentary and about three hours of sample loops that demonstrate the genres and sub-genres (and sub-sub-genres, etc.)

Educational and fun to read, occasionally irritating...be prepared to see your fave music put down (OmniStrata: don't look at Epic House  ).

Sample quote:
Ishkur wrote:If there is anyone who is responsible for the complete and thorough pussification of Trance, making it offensively lame to the point where not only newbie ravers but also their soccer moms could enjoy it, it's Robert Miles. "Children" has the exclusive accolade as being the #1 rave recruitment song of all time. It's also probably responsible for the embarrassing onslaught of banal, melody-driven trance that dominated the last half of the 90s. Hell, I remember Anne Savage playing this...song at my very first rave. This isn't trance; this is like that crappy background music on the TV listings channel....
Hmmm...I used to like that song.

The site is probably only good for broadband users. If you're on dialup, give it a try, but don't expect much.

Hmm..VERY informative. I like it. I must like "electronic" music if I found myself liking quite a few of the sample songs.

Also, it helped me find the name of a song I heard long ago, and could never find cause I didn't know the name. Well that song is Oxygene Part IV by Jean Michel Jarre. So that's what the fuck it was.

Anyways, much thanks for pointing out this site.

I can't believe he lumped together electro-clash with new synthpop.

But he gave EBM respect, so good job.

Lol, yeah, I saw that thing a while back when Doki linked to it. I had a lot of fun looking a lot of that.

If you haven't been there for awhile, it might be worth checking in again. This is now version 2.0, released last weekend according to the di.fm news board: "...Eleven new genres have been added since the last update, and scores of new samples throughout..."

Damn, I went there last month and they already updated it? That thing is a pain to load on 56k... but it wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it would be. I might give it another look this weekend.

I loved the way he laid everything but when he throws his opinions in there, I got really annoying real quick. Just about all the genres I like he totally hates and did his best to say how they are pathetic and sucky in every single way possible. Still it was pretty informative, I had no idea there were that many different types of electronic music.

Lol, that's my favorite part. Otherwise it would just be dull. :?

Yeah, lol I liked that too.

But seriously, does it really matter what he thinks of your music to you?
Unless of course you liked something like stupid or booty house  then you should try something different.

But this is a great guide....anyone know of anymore like this?

The MusicMatch Guide is comprehensive, but not as much fun. And no music samples that I could find.
