Youtube/Google tried. They got sued a few years ago over all the copywritted material on their site regardless of whether it was fair use or not. They tried fighting, and were even lucky enough to keep their users information away from it. Since the music industries also wanted everyone's information basically too. They had no choice but to agree/allow music industries/ other companies the right to take down their content. Even if some of it was fair use, because otherwise they couldn't keep Youtube up. I'm not sure all the details in this, but I believe that's most of the basics of it.TrufflePigStudios wrote:
People should have the right to use footage in a creative way as long as it isn't for a profit...sites like youtube shouldn't be allowed or forced to take down videos like that! Who is monetarily profiting from youtube? It isn't the users who post up a video of them singing a Gaga song, or amv creators like us. There are ads on every single one of my amv posts on youtube...who is getting the money from that because it certainly isn't me...so why should my videos be punished? That money should go towards the studios or artists or whoever created the content in my videos...and if that is how it works than why is there a problem? (I don't know how youtube works btw, so if I'm mistaken about any of this I apologize).

@TrufflePigStudios: you should read some of Lawrence Lessig's stuff. He has some really interesting things to say along those lines.

Re: SOPA and Internet Censorship
Interesting, I didn't know that. I wonder if the artists themselves have any say in the matter, or if it is just the company that represents them. As someone who is making a career out of music, I would be happy if people were inspired to create something using my work. I understand that youtube would need to keep from getting sued though. I'm not trying to blame youtube, sites like them and google have been extremely against SOPA, so I'm pretty sure they understand the difference between piracy and fair use...I suppose it's the corporations who own the rights then who are trying to monopolize art?Chained(E)Studio wrote:
