It's convention specific. Some require it, others don't. Check the rules of the convention that you plan on entering.

Almost none require you to be there, but it's generally a common courtesy. Especially to those who are going to be in attendance (i.e it's nice to see your work on the big screen). It kinda sucks to get cut in favor of something by someone not in attendance, but then again, sometimes contests just need entries regardless. So it depends.

For someone who isn't used to entering, it isn't common sense to know that.

But reading the rules of the convention you're entering is, and they will usually say whether you need to be there or not :3
