Quick questions about creators and contests...

Post by Coderjo » Wed Oct 12, 2005 7:06 pm

If there were a small con in your local area with an AMV competition, but they only took submissions on VHS, would you enter?

If no, why not?

If it is because you can't output your digital video to a VHS tape, what if someone could do the transfer for you?

Thank you in advance to anyone that replies! :D

This should be in General AMVs.

And of course i'll enter :) I can't miss out on a local convention scene, even if it's small :D

If they required that we submit in VHS, I most likely wouldn't enter. If a con wants to use VHS for their showings, they should accept the digital submissions and perform the transfer themselves. No need to inconvenience the entrants with the extra process.

I wouldn't trust them to get it right. Any errors in the transfer should be mine and mine alone.

No, because I don't feel it's worth the trouble since (1) I probably wouldn't be able to go anyway and (2) there are bigger audiences elsewhere (you said it was "small").

Only time I can remember making such a transfer myself is for Anime Boston 2004, when the option was between VHS and DVD and I didn't have a DVD burner.

I wouldn't do it because I don't know how and we aren't living in the VCR era anymore. :o

I would totally enter. Would weed out alot of creators. I think if your serious about entering, you do the work to submit how the contest request. Most people say to use digital because in truth they only can output digitially, (and usually can only import digitally as well), so they want to bully people into doing it 'their' way. They say things about quality and such... but really they are to lazy to output to VHS, and they will say that the convention should output for them, which usually means that they don't have the ability to do so, and want to push it off on the convention as well, vs spending the time and money to output a video. But a good video is still a good video, even if it's on VHS. The conventions should accept what they can handle. To often I've seen conventions/contests accept digital entries (due to the pressure of creators) without the skill to run a digital contest, and the contest turns out very badly as a result.

I'd send them some of my second rate stuff (in other words, anything I've created to date). I'd be glad to support a local AMV scene but it isn't worth the pain of seeing something GOOD destroyed by the VHS.

Because it's so inconvenient to hook a VCR up to your computer and hit "record" while playing your AMV through a SVideo or COmposite out. Most video cards nowadays have them.

However, I can understand if you don't have video out, not wanting to do it.

But on principle, I dunno, I think that not entering just BECAUSE they require VHS is silly. There are a lot of cons that require you to enter in MPEG1 or 2, rather than MPEG4 (DivX, XviD, etc.) so their mpeg cards will be able to read the file. I remember not being able to enter a contest because of this, but I really wanted to. But all I had was an XviD, and didn't want to re-encode it. Same thing, practically.

If given the same choice again, I'd re-encode to MPEG2, no questions asked.

So in short, yes, I'd enter in a constest that required a submission on VHS.
