MAniFest AMV Competition - Closed

Post by Infinity Squared » Thu Apr 07, 2005 4:54 am

Please look at my latest post for the update on the situation.

Hi guys...

MANIFEST (Melbourne ANIme FESTival) is once again holding competitions for AMVs but this year we have not one but two types of competitions.

As the new AMV coordinator this year, I decided to elevate the status of the AMV competition to be one of those 'must see' events in Manifest. I guess this stems from my being disappointed a little with how last year's competition was handled... so if you can't beat them, join them I say :P

Anyway, as per usual, we are running the Normal AMV Competition. The rules can be found here.

An exciting addition to this year's competition is the Iron Chef AMV Competition. This is when AMV creators battle it out, creating an AMV from scratch using only footage we provide (they can choose their music). They collect the anime footage to use on an unveiling on the Saturday. They then have until the next day in the Judging Event to complete their masterpieces...

In the Judging Event, in true Iron Chef style (with the Chairman, three judges, aprons and chef's hats and an array of different coloured capsicums), the contestants will then be able to exhibit their creations to a crowd and have judges decide the winner. The rules and detailed structure are here.

At this point the closing date for the Normal AMV competition is July 22, 2005 while for the Iron Chef Competition, it's July 15, 2005 but please note that these rules were written for an August Manifest. Now that things are changed then most likely these dates will change too and I am in the process of bringing it to the committee to push backs these dates.

Any questions, feel free to follow the contact details on those sites, or just post here...

Cool. :) I'll have to make sure I have something to send off- the prize packet from when I entered and won one of the awards 2 years ago was one of the coolest prizes I've gotten from any convention. Plus, it's just cool knowing there are people watching your videos on the other side of the planet.

Oh, yes having your videos seen on the other side of the world... I have my latest vid showing in Sakura Con this weekend... I'm so excited and can't wait to hear the news... but I'm also disappointed that I'm not there to absorb the crowd reaction to it...

Anyway, yes... please do send!

Looking toward putting together and sending in an entry- one thing that isn't covered in the rules is what the preferred format to submit in would be. This is generally driven by how the entries will be played back at the contest- if you're playing them back on a Netstream card (as many contests do these days), submitting an MPEG2 encode of the video is generally preferred. If the entries will be encoded and authored off to a DVD, the originally output file (in many cases, a HuffYUV AVI file) is probably best. Basically, I'd like to be able to send in my submission such that it won't have to be converted/re-encoded or at least have the least number of conversions done on it. Thanks!

Don't worry. I'm playing things straight off a computer, connected via the usual digital out to the digital projector. No DVD authoring will occur, no re-encoding.

We get quite a lot of entries to Manifest and I expect it to be much bigger this year with the sort of increased campaigning I've done for it. It should be big indeed... and with the other AMV comp in Manifest starting this year (Iron Chef), there definitely will be quite a pull in entries and audience... hope to see your stuff there.

So, this would make a high-bitrate MPEG2 the preferred way of sending in the submissions I'd imagine?

I would say yes... In terms of equipment, I have made sure that I have the best available in order to screen a myriad of formats. I guess for convenience sake, MPEG2 would be very easy to handle.

I just wanted to bump this thread...

There's a little under a month left for the Manifest AMV Competition closes its doors to entries for 2005... and seeing as how many of you will be from other countries, I suggest that if you are planning on sending us anything, that you do it soon because time is starting to run out indeed...

Umm... and a little correction as well is needed, I think, from what I mentioned above. Currently my equipment seems to be playing around a bit and I'm not sure if I'll have suitable replacements by the time Manifest comes (in September 23-25). This means that at the moment, I *may* have trouble playing MPEG or just about most other videos with bit-rates that are very high (i.e. over 6Mbps). I hope this doesn't inconvience anyone sending entries, but rest assured that I will do everything in my power that any video you send in will be played to the best possible.

Perfect timing, given I just sent off the CD with my entries on it- and they're encoded to usual contest specs- i.e., very high bitrate MPEG2. :?
