Hello everyone!

Thank you once again for your patience with us. We know this year has not been easy, considering everything going on in the world. We do apologise that our competition has not been the greatest either.

Despite all this, we are glad to have announced winners! Congratulations to everyone!!! :)

Thank you very much Empyreanous for showing the results!

----------

Dear fellow AMV editors; past and present,

Thank you very much for entering the SMASH! AMV Competition for 2020. I appreciate your patience when dealing with myself and the team in making this competition possible, especially during the pandemic. The journey that you guys take when making an AMV can be a short or long one, but the effort you put in can never be under appreciated. A lot of thinking, sweat, guts, tears and sleepless nights go into your works and it is one hell of a journey. And I'm glad to see that you reach the end of that journey when you finish your great AMV works.

And speaking of the end of a journey, there is also another journey that has ended, one that had gone on for a very long time but had to meet its eventual end.

After 11 years of being the Sydney Manga and Anime Show's Anime Music Video Co-ordinator, I would like to announce that I am stepping down from my role, effective at the end of the SMASH! AMV Competition for 2020.

Letting go of this AMV competition is not easy I will admit; it has been 'my baby' for the last 11 years and I have dedicated so much time into it that my family friends would see me sleep in front of the computer during admin work or judging AMVs. Sometimes they questioned my sanity too. While my passion for AMVs now is not so big compared to when I first started, I still did my absolute best in giving my all to this competition and watching your AMVs have been an absolute privilege.

I became the co-ordinator in 2010, taking on a hobby that was considered to be on its last legs; a dying competition with little to no support within the Australian Anime community. Australian AMVs and their editors are a small blimp compared to the humongous communities of North America, South America and Europe; a trend to this day. But I took on the role aiming to reverse this and show the world that Australian editors had tremendous skills and amazing AMVs! I wasn't the best AMV editor out there, but there were ones I know who were great; from InfinitySquared to eake4, from David Tse to JavisCOE, from Empyreanous to Alderwick; these were some of the greatest editors that Australia had to offer and I was very proud to showcase their works at SMASH!

But I also want to pay tribute to the international editors as well! I could've just opened the competition to locals only, but I decided against it because I wanted to show your epic works to the local community. And while you guys dominated the awards (lol), you've helped inspired a lot of people in the audience to take up video editing and start a new generation of local AMV editors. There are so many people I could mention, but the ones that stood out the most include (but not limited to) Shin, Xophilarus, l33tmeatwad (and the rest of PixelBlended Studios) shorisquared, drewaconclusion, BakaOppai, Okami, TritioAFB, Centurione, Pikapwn, LC_Lapen, Heshan, PaNTSU oF d00m, AimoAio, BecauseImBored1, Cirera, MinetChan, kireblue; and so many more names that I could mention. Regardless, I want to say a massive thank you to all you international editors who have entered the SMASH! AMV Competition in the last 11 years. You guys were the entertainers, the inspirers, and the coolest editors to the local community here. Without you, the SMASH! AMV Competition would not be the premier AMV competition for Australia today. I wish one day I could meet you all in person and thank you personally! But that will have to wait for a bit (damn pandemic)!

Finally, I want to say a massive thank you to my team over the 11 years I had worked with:

Nathan (retired) - My wingman, my fellow co-coordinator from 2012-2019, who assisted me whenever possible, who was always there whenever I was not around, and was the 'face' of the AMV competition during event day. Thank you for always being there for me.

Eake4 (retired) - While the time together was short, thank you so much for helping me when my staff numbers were low, and thank you for judging at the crucial periods when a winner was not determined. Your tech and editing experience also helped me in making my trailer so thank you.

Monica (retired) - The only one who was never an editor in my team, but a big AMV fan whilst also being the harshest judges in my team. But your opinions mattered and you helped me with my decision making during judging, so thank you! You were also the main point of contact for email communication and you covered me when I was busy. I cannot thank you enough.

Anam (Empyreanous) (current assistant co-ordinator) - I was hesitant to take you in as staff because I did not want to disturb you in your studies, but I'm forever grateful that you joined the team and helped me throughout my darkest times in personal life when I could not attend to my AMV duties. Without your help, the AMV motivation flame in me would have died long ago.

Chrystal (current assistant co-ordinator) - My lovely partner of 11 years; whether you were an official judge/staff or not, you were always my supporter during the hardest of times, but funny enough, my number #1 enemy when we could not agree on certain AMVs, to the point where we don't talk for the rest of the day LOL. But your contribution to the team has always been great, so thank you. Thank you for being by my side, especially in the countless nights when I needed motivation to go on with my AMV work.

That was lengthy, but that is all from me.

I may not be able to reach everyone, but it was an absolute pleasure to have you onboard in these 11 years. I hope I did my role; this AMV competition was for the editors and AMV fans, I believe I just merely created a platform for you guys to show your absolute best to the Australian community.

Will I get back into judging in the future? Who knows, but for now, it's time for me to move on in my life and for once, I may finally have time to edit an AMV and enter again!

And while my successor has not been officially named yet, I hope you guys continue to support the SMASH! AMV Competition! It helps to keep our community here stay alive!

Once again, to all the editors who entered in the SMASH! AMV Competition over the last 11 years, to my staff, and to all those who came to SMASH! and watch AMVs; and of course, be with me on my journey: Thank you.

Signing off and kind regards,

Renato Jean Gaylican
