"You grant us unconditional, irrevocable, and eternal permission to use your submission(s) in any way, which includes (but is not limited to) copying, sharing, and exhibiting, as well as any purposes and usages that may be unrelated to this event."

Isn't that a bit excessive?

Not really when you think about it. That's pretty boiler plate. Think about every part of that.
Copying: They need to copy your files.
Sharing: Obviously they have to share your files for judging.
Exhibiting: That's the contest
Unrelated useage: AMV rooms show AMVs from past contests.

Yeah, those things are reasonable, but it's when you combine "unconditional, irrevocable, and eternal permission to use your submission(s) in any way" with "any purposes and usages that may be unrelated to this event" that it translates to, "we can do whatever we want with your video, regardless if it's appropriate or not, and you can't do a thing about it because you agreed to these rules." And "AMV rooms show AMVs from past contests" is exhibiting, which is directly related to the event.

It's legalease. If they make it super specific and then do something minorly outside the previously agreed upon list, they open themselves up to lawsuits. It's happened. I know a story about a guy who sued an AMV contest because he didn't get in. You are going to find those same words or similar ones on literally every contest. If you aren't comfortable with it, don't enter, but I'm telling you they are just covering the bases. They aren't about to sell your video or anything.

Well with a clause like "in any way" how can someone NOT think that their work will appear on a DVD by the con and they profit from it while the artist gets nothing? There's nothing in that clause saying they won't do that.

You shouldn’t have to not enter. You can’t stave criticism by saying that either. What they should do is hold themselves accountable with reasonable rules and being mindful enough not to make any mistakes, rather than hold the entrants accountable with wild rules just to save themselves if they do something dumb.

I think that statement above is vague. Using phrases such as "in any way" and "usages that may be unrelated to the event" should be more specific such as "under Saboten Con/Saboten Con AMV events and future events" so it narrows it down having permission to use submitted AMVs solely for the contest and premiering submitted AMVs for other panels at the con/future convention events. Saying "any way" and "unrelated to the event" sounds like they are trying to get permission to use your video that is irrelevant to the con itself and for other ownership uses which is indeed, extreme in this case.

Most conventions know better than that by now. If they produced and obtained any monetary value over DVDs full of copyrighted material they’d have bigger people to worry about than the editors.
