Tora-Con 2020 AMV Contest -Finalists Announced-

Post by Tora-Con AMV Contest » Sun Jan 12, 2020 12:18 pm

Hello AMV Editors!

If you haven't been following Tora-Con's social media pages, you might not be aware that our AMV Contest is (finally) open for 2020! BUT it is only open until the end of February! 😱

We were hoping to open the contest in November, but we were unfortunately held up by new requirements from our host university. We now finally have the go-ahead to start accepting submissions! I know this is not a lot of time if you don't already have an AMV ready to go. However, keep in mind that if you submitted an AMV to us last year and it was not selected as a contest finalist, you can try again with the same video this year (so long as it meets all of our other contest criteria.)

Contest Info:
Link to enter: https://toracon.org/contests/amv-contest/
Deadline: February 29th, 2020

Convention Info:
Con date: March 21-22, 2020
Location: Rochester Institute of Technology, Rochester, NY, USA

Rules summary:
We encourage everyone to read our full official rules here, but below are some highlights.
  • You can enter up to 2 videos, they must be in different categories
  • Entries should be less than 2 years old
  • No entries that were finalists at previous Tora-Con AMV Contests
  • Entries may not have won an award (or awards) at 2+ other AMV contests at the time of their entry (our anti-sandbagging rule)
  • No credits--all entries will be presented with standardized title cards during the convention screening
  • No watermarks, logos, subtitles or other on-screen text unless you made them yourself
  • No excessive violence/gore
  • Minimal cursing (no f-bombs, please)
  • No nudity
  • No erotic or pornographic content, especially of underage characters
We know those last 2 rules tend to be difficult for AMV editors, because anime is, well, anime. However, our convention is hosted on a college campus and it is imperative that all of our contest content remains suitable for a general audience. Thank you for your cooperation, and we hope to see your entries soon!

I sent in two AMV's but for the Muv-Luv one I wasn't too sure on if it'll be Action or Romance since it's a bit of both. Feel free to switch the category to whatever you think fits it best.

Thank you for participating Cneq! I can see the reason for your ambiguity on the category of your video. We'll keep your comment in mind!

Re: Tora-Con 2020 AMV Contest Ending Soon! Seeking COMEDY

Post by Tora-Con AMV Contest » Mon Feb 24, 2020 9:15 pm

Hello everyone!

Our contest deadline is fast approaching--
But as it currently stands, we will not be able to fill several categories this year! Each category has room for up to 6 finalists, which will be selected by our staff judges in a couple weeks. At the moment, we have the following videos accepted:

Drama - 20
Action - 9
Romance - 7
Upbeat - 4
Trailer/Other - 3
Comedy/Parody - 2

As you can see, there is room for more finalists in several categories, and we don't have enough entries in Comedy/Parody to even have a true contest! If you have a funny AMV that otherwise meets our contest rules, please submit it here by the end of the weekend!

Thank you to everyone who applied for our contest. We are no longer accepting entries as of February 29th.

It was a true deluge of entries, with our accepted entries count nearly doubling in the final week of the contest.
If anyone is curious, here is our final count for entries into each category:
Drama- 31
Action- 18
Romance- 13
Upbeat- 11
Trailer/Other- 7
Comedy/Parody- 6
Total: 86

And its cancelled: https://www.rit.edu/coronavirus

I at least got in as a finalist for the Trailers, and the doc they released stated they will do some kind of playlist for people to see the entries online.

Hello everyone!
Sorry for taking a while to post here. As you may have expected due to the current concerns about the coronavirus, Tora-Con 2020 was cancelled. Although our staff judges had already selected the winners of our three Judge's Awards prior to the cancellation, we were not able to hold an official convention screening to have an audience vote on the six Category Awards or Best in Show award. However, we are currently planning on screening the 2020 finalists during a special, separate event in our 2021 convention. So, there is still a chance we will be able to award Category Awards and Best in Show for 2020 retroactively!

Below is a link to the Tora-Con website, with a list of all of our finalists this year, with the three Judge's Awards winners noted. Next is a link to our YouTube playlist featuring all of the finalist AMVs that were available on that platform. Thank you again to everyone who participating in the 2020 contest, and congratulations to our three winners!
