It's ridiculous that the largest anime convention in the US doesn't seem to know this.
Clarify please? Was that a stab? If so may I ask what prompted it? I am more than aware of the issues associated with Huffy. I am also aware of its benefits.
The actual preferred format for submission. for ease of compilation, is Mpeg2 because that way I don't have to retranscode the files for the presentation DVD. However. The options are given because every editor has their own preference.

I find it interesting that you believe Huffy files are really hard on any computer to play.
Give me the largest most complex huffy file, i'll play it with ZERO problems. Seriously. if you think huffy files are hard on any computer to play, you seriously need to get your hands on a better computer.
Uncompressed (RAW) video is harder to play than huffy.

I wouldn't jump to conclusions and make assumptions based on what other people say. I am sure Michael knows this. Now if Michael posts here and says: "We have DQed entries cuz of laggy play with huffyuv and we used an old computer". Then there might be beef, but sorry, no dice on this one. "When You Assume, You Make an Ass of U and Me"
AaronAMV wrote:Also, I think it's pretty dumb, like Hagaren said, that you would be DQ'ing people for submitting HuffyUV when you can play it. A lot of people edit with Macs, and Lagarith isn't an accepted codec for Macs... You can only use HuffyUV if you want lossless editing.
*sigh* one person says something that isn't even verified as true and people are already jumping ship and taking it for truth. wowzers. reflection of the masses?

It's not just him who's saying that. :|
A lot of editors just said that they have problems playing huffy files.

I don't have a problem as long as the audio isn't interleaved with the video.

There were no DQs for huffy. Who told you there was?
My editing computer plays all huffy files as slow as heck. It hates huffy, simple as that. When I tried them on my laptop, they played just fine. I sent in those same files. I got this as my confirmation:
Unfortunately both of your video entries were disqualified for technical issues. There appeared to be serious encoding issues causing the video to be unwatchable. I tested it with multiple players on three separate PCs. I apologize for the inconvenience this may cause you. You are welcome to re-enter them into next year’s contest after correcting the tech issues.
Now I don't know what technical difficulties there were, but all I can think of is that it's because it was a huffy file. I saved it as a data disk. I emailed him back, saying this:
Is it possible to send a resubmission to watch them properly? I was
going to send them in lagarith, but you said you do not accept it.
Huffy does horrible on my computer but it was the only one I could do on
the submissions encoding list. I thought the technical issues were only
due to my computer, since it does not accept huffy at all.
He replied:
Unfortunately Judging was completed last weekend. I am just really behind on
sending out the receipt notifications (things are hella hectic for Expo this
year) so submitting them now the most I might be able to do would be get
them in Preshow and I can't guarantee that. If you want to I would suggest
just re-rendering them as Mpeg2 (which they all end up as anyway for
presentation) and I can try and put one of them in the PreShow but it is too
late for judging for this years contest. I am deeply sorry.
Not once did he correct me and said it wasn't because it was huffy. I also think that it is a bit unfair that I got a confirmation a week after the judging was over without given a chance to resubmit.

That sucks... :\

I'm still hanging in limbo wondering what even happened to my entries...

in light of kazemon's situation, i take back what i said... :\
that is unfortunate kazemon.
----
however i do stand by my point on viewing huffy files.
I doubt michael is using a bad computer to view the files.
I know personally that if anything, there are many machines available to his disposal that are well equipped to play huffyuv content.

I submitted Huffy and got a confirmation. There was no complaining of any sort over the usage of it. Hope that there's fewer issues. And thanks agian for the quick response guys.

i remember last year DP mentioned how the huffy sizes could get pretty rediculous, so this year i entered in either xvid or x264 just to make it easier on him :| and all vids this year were said to play fine.

personally, i don't see the reason for entering lossless videos to con in the first place. yeesss i understand you want your video played at the highest quality possible, but honestly when it's played ONE time onscreen and the only one who would notice the difference is you, is it really that important?

after all, if the video itself is entertaining, voters at the convention aren't going to bitch about how sharp the quality is--we have the .org for that XD
