Heh. Not quite... at least by my suggestion, he wouldn't qualify due to his having won an award before.BogoSort wrote:Indeed. So would you be a first time entrant if said rules were in place when you do decide to finally enter Otakon?

Ok...I see a lot of good points...and a few bad ones...I'll attempt to sort through it all, but first...some sdie notes.
1)I apologize for not saying anything earlier...my work scedule does not permit me much time on the computer until mid-january comes by. Then, I shall have more time.
2)The original intent of this very post was to see was the public reaction was...obviously, it wasn't very good to the original idea (*respectful bow to those who thought, on some level, it was a good idea*)
3)I was a dumbass for not putting ANY details about this...AT ALL!
and now on to our regularly scheduled post...
With Otakon being a fan con...I recieved...literally hundreds of emails (many from the same guy) saying various comments like...
-"Pyson sukked runnning teh contest! U have 2 rokk bettr than it" (that's an actual quote...I saved it for the mere fact of making fun of it, as this person couldn't be more wrong...Matt, IMO, did an awesome job running it...and he "rokks", too!
-"I wish you luck" (btw, I thank all who said as such)
-"Don't blow it, fool!" (no comment)
but many of the respectable emails expressed a desire for another contest, as they only goto Otakon and no other convention in a year.
Btw, folks three things you should know about me
1)I see AMV's as an art form
2)I think all amv's are created equall
3)I've seen over 700 (thanks to the org) long before I aquired this position
So I thought (and you can't really blame me for this one) that if some of the top award winners got together in a contest where they were allowed to truely strutt their stuff and pull out all the stops...there'd be some kickass AMV's.
As far as picking the name goes...I've never been to AWA, or seen their website...as I had never thought of it. 'Masters' was just a name I picked out of the air. To the person who suggested using a name of a local competition for the name of this contest, you should know now that I respect everyone too much to call an amv contest, "The Preakness" (or prickness, as I call it) or "The AMV Crab-munchers" (YES...it IS a real contest around here), but it's a decent idea, nonetheless.
I apologize for the idea of personally handing out invitations...I thought it would add some elegance to the whole thing...not all ideas are good, I know that...I chalk this up to bad execution...nothing I really intended on doing...anyway, so let's forget about that!
Like I stated earlier, the details are sketchy, which really means is that they can be changed in many ways...so for this "Master's" thing...it's out! Consider it gone, as I'm going to consider it as "New guy wanted to try something, and it was ok on paper and that's all...back to the drawing board!" I have noticed the sugestion of a movie/trailer-thing...of which I like. I'll try to see if it's possible to make it happen this year, even!
This entire thread served a 2nd service however, which was to get some feedback (any feedback) from the community, as I prefer to chat via AIM (Superion03) instead of a forum, where I have to wait for a post...which can be anything from 1 minute to one month (depends on the forum you're on). Long story short, I'm trying to get more feedback from individuals, so I can bounce ideas off of from time to time.
So give me a hello sometime...I'm still learning the atmosphere here and I'd like to make as few trips to the school of hard knocks as possible...just a few caveats...
1)Usually if I don't know something, I'll ask
2)My thought process skips a couple steps, so not everything must be explained to me
3)If it seems I have forgotten something...I probably have...just give me a reminder and we'll be cool.
I plan on meeting some of you really soon in person, and for the rest of you, I'll meet you when I can!

That's pretty much to be exepected as well as the comments.... feedback in a nutshell I find contains "the good, the bad and the ugly"....With Otakon being a fan con...I recieved...literally hundreds of emails (many from the same guy) saying various comments like...

I not against the idea, but concerned with how it will effect the current one and given Otakon's schedule constraints to meet the desires of fans in every field, how it would fit in time wise.but many of the respectable emails expressed a desire for another contest, as they only goto Otakon and no other convention in a year.
Well you have to see this from my end... Just because there is a "top award" contest does not mean I'll make a "Kick Ass" video... It also them makes it sound like the current contest does not have "Kick Ass videos!" AMVs are a HOBBY no contest drives me on how good my videos or anyone else's will be (for the most part anyway). We do this because we love it and do the best job at it in our creations. I think you won't get ANYTHING better just becuase someone danngles a bigger carrot in front of us. Sorry is this sound a bit harsh, but I just want you to understand this from my point of view as a AMV creator.Btw, folks three things you should know about me

But seriously, I have to agree with Vlad here. Personally, I make AMVs when I get the ideas and when I have the time, and which cons I send it to depend directly on when I finish it (and, sometimes, whether I win anything). And I also agree that the contest that's there already is pretty kickin' in terms of quality of the videos.

Is this a joke? This is the worst Idea i have heard in a LOOng time . As people have said , (I think) Otakon is unique in that it is simple.
The only problem i really have with the con is that the prescreenings are a bit limited.
I would say push the deadline back a few months, and talk with people running other cons to see if Otakon could set up a few prescreening panels for those slow SUndays. I realize that its too late in the game (maybe) to do that this year .. but certainly next year.
please dont change my otakon AMV contest.

You do realize that open prescreenings for a convention's mucic video contest are not very common, and that you should be lucky they exist at all for Otakon...Freako wrote:Is this a joke? Uhm...isn't Otakon's deadline in May? For an August con? Seems pretty well in advance to me. If they change the deadline to something like February or March, I can almost guarantee I won't have a video ready for it. I also have a feeling a lot of creators need that time to finish their Otakon entries. Maybe I'm wrong and everyone already startedFreako wrote:I would say push the deadline back a few months, and talk with people running other cons to see if Otakon could set up a few prescreening panels for those slow SUndays. Yea, I agree, you really can;t push the date that far up since most people work on thier videos for the con year at the start of the year....dwchang wrote:
