MJ- Idol-ology made the actual contest and was shown. But even if it had been one of the final videos, I believe it wouldn't have been allowed to win anything due to its having won at Bakuretsucon...
Is that really a rule o_O I mean do alot of contests use a rule like that, if so It's pretty messed up and might cause ppl not to bother entering smaller contests because omg they might win and not be able to win the larger contests they really wanted to win. Imagine movies losing oscars cuz they won golden globes or mtv awards :P

and the best of show winner didn't even win action, is this because they don't wanna give them both awards o_O does winning one award automaticly disqualify you from other awards o_O

I believe the two Japanese guests were the singer (maya okamoto?) and the composer (name eludes me) and one US Guest. I won't go further into this though since well...judging was perfect per se.

The pacing was done well and there wasn't the usual re-hash or running out of scenes moments that many drama vids fall into. Plus I was happy that the music and themes in the AMV matched the original themes of the show(Escaflowne).
Thank you very much! Yeah I tried very hard to find "perfect" scenes (hopefully it worked). This is where most of the time went into. I am also glad that you see the "music/theme" matching the show itself. I tried very hard to illustrate the relationship through the song rather than the other way around. I hope that makes sense. I guess I should stop since well...it's not really related to the contest results and I have a post in the announcements page. Thanks a lot though!

It's the rule for ACen (it's in there) and I think even for Otakon. Not all cons do this, but I do see why they do this at the ones that do. I hate to be brutally honest, but there are *A LOT* of award trolls on the .org. People who just care about awards and enter into every contest. I don't think I need to explain that this is rude to the other creators in the contest (who might be cut) and at the same time rude since their videos have already received recognition.

No offense, but...well...I dislike this mentality QUITE a bit. It really defeats the purpose of AMVs in general (having fun) and makes the entire thing one giant competition (the people who only make to win or at the least submit to EVERY con). Also, to be honest, if you submitted to EVERY con, statistically, you're bound to win a few. IMO though I find those wins a bit empty and have never understood the necessity to enter every con and win a few awards...I'd rather win one or two from specific cons that are special to me and that I am in attendence for. I'd imagine it'd feel a lot better being their and being formally recognized than receiving my pretty trophy and staring at it (with that ego boost it gives....funny since well...you're bound to win eventually).

Don't get me wrong, I agree with your points about the "best video" winning, but at the same time, how would you feel if a video like "Odorikuruu" was in EVERY con and won EVERY award. That would be wrong since other videos would not receive recognition. Even if "Odorikuruu" or another video is "better" they already did receive recognition right?

Isn't it more polite to let others receive recognition for their hard work as well? As much as it says it's a "contest" and people are "competitive", I (to a degree) back this...or rather, I back it up when a con enforces it. There are plenty of cons who don't do this and they can do that as well. I basically agree with what the cons choose because well..it's their contest. Wow, I'm not making sense :-P.

In conclusion, what I am trying to say is that their is a reason for this rule and at the same time it's not set in stone for every con. Unfortunately, it is the case for ACen and Otakon and I see their reasonings and respect it. In fact, I agree with it for these cons since they receive so many entries that it would be unfortunate for great videos to not receive recognition b/c of well...a video (that is great mind you) that has already received recognition.

BTW I just wanna state that I am NOT attacking you. You just touched a nerve and annoyance I have in the community. In fact, I think you're a nice guy and you were just bringing up the point. So please don't take this as an attack to you, I am just arguing the point...not you :).

Forgot to reply to this...I believe I addressed this above. The winner of best of show was not even nominated for best of show (and at the same time did not win it's own category). I know this is coming across as me bashing the video, but I am *only* stating the facts and not my personal opinion as to which video should've won or lost. The facts are well..the facts. It wasn't nominated as a finalist and it won.

Unfortunately, the people who made the final call aren't here, but I have already stated the facts of the matter above (the judges themselves, the direction (or lack thereof) they received and so on). Make whatever conclusions you'd like. I won't comment :-P.

When I entered Acen, I didn't know it had won at Bakuretsucon. :| Oh well, if comp was as tough as you say it was, I wouldn't have won anyway. :p

I would have liked to see it push the envelope and pull in some doujin. Such a nice twisted idea I was surprised I hadn't already thought of it. But I seem to pass up Tenchi footage a lot. Nice Job to all in that category.
I should have waited and bought the sexy OVA's.

Looking back at this its really long @_@ and some might take this all the wrong way, but I believe any competition should be completely fair for all, it's how I've always felt in many things :l

"I hate to be brutally honest, but there are *A LOT* of award trolls on the .org. People who just care about awards and enter into every contest. I don't think I need to explain that this is rude to the other creators in the contest (who might be cut) and at the same time rude since their videos have already received recognition."

Well there's alot of contests in a given year, how many really gives you troll status o_O I intended to enter 4 contests, AX and fanime because its in CA and I'll go, AWA cuz everyones gonna be there, I may or may not. And Otakon cuz its one of the biggest and probably the biggest east coast one. I really only entered acen (and animaze, maybe I should drop that one or ill be a troll) cuz quu's thing had it on there, and the contest was only a couple weeks after the deadline I sent it on, so I could get a quick reaction to my vids rather than wait till late June/July for AX/Fanime. I don't want to release my vids online until then because I want it to be fresh when I see it with them, but I also didn't feel like waiting so long to see if ppl like it >_<
Is it really rude to cut vids that aren't as good for vids that won in some con miles/states away? I mean should my vid or euphoria be dropped from AX (yes I know they don't have this rule) because we won at ACEN, even though the deadlines were the same day. Should they not be shown to a entire new audience, or should they be shown but lose because they already won, and won't ppl complain their votes/applause meant nothing, or the vids were "robbed" Would the winners be happy they won using this rule? I mean I would have like Tom's and MJ's vids in the comp, regardless to other cons they won, who wants to win that way? :l well I know someone but I won't say who o:)

"No offense, but...well...I dislike this mentality QUITE a bit. It really defeats the purpose of AMVs in general (having fun) and makes the entire thing one giant competition (the people who only make to win or at the least submit to EVERY con)."

I think theres alot of reasons to enter any con, awards: maybe, prizes/trophy: maybe, having fun: if your there yes, getting your name out maybe, getting you videos shown to new audiences I think is the main one though. I mean you really think everyone at the con knows about the org, I didn't when I first saw amvs at cons. I don't think anyone has ever submitted to EVERY con in a year, thats alot @_@ theres like 6 this month not including online ones, and I also don't think a bad video entered in every con would eventually get something.

"but at the same time, how would you feel if a video like "Odorikuruu" was in EVERY con and won EVERY award. That would be wrong since other videos would not receive recognition. Even if "Odorikuruu" or another video is "better" they already did receive recognition right?"

Well I don't think any vid can win every award, most vids need to stick to one catergory even if its has elements in all, if they won their catergory, best of, and all the technical/special awards, then wow thats a good vid, and I understand why I didn't win, but maybe I'm just not a sore loser :l and alot of ppl are and their "fun" was taken away because they didn't win anything. Fun for me is seeing it up on the big screen, or hearing ppl tell you it was good, not hearing ppl tell you it was better than those other ones.

"Isn't it more polite to let others receive recognition for their hard work as well? As much as it says it's a "contest" and people are "competitive"

I thought it was more polite to have winners the audience would agree with, otherwise it should be a online contest :l I guess others should get honorable mentions if the reaction they got when it was shown was not enough for them...
If ppl are just trying to have fun they shouldn't care about the competition and only care about it being seen and enjoyed. If you really want to win a contest and feel good about it you should at least be on equal footing with all other entries.

MJ- I believe everyone was quite aware that Idol-Ology's win had happened well after the submission deadline. Looking back at it, I believe about half of the videos that had won at previous conventions were not actually cut out of the actual contest- I can think of two that were and two that weren't. Since the final say wasn't up to us on what went in and what didn't (that would have been the contest director making the call), I don't know how much it entered into it. As it turned out, it didn't end up being an issue when it came to the awards...

On the whole topic of trolling for awards/submitting the same vid to lots of cons... Personally, I tend to be of largely the same mind as Daniel. I don't think it's really fair for a video that has won an award (especially a major one) at a fairly major convention to be sent in again to another convention. Using ACen as an example, there were (as we've said) over 100 video submitted. I was there to watch through all of them, and very few of them (if any) were of a level that the audience would not have enjoyed seeing. I personally don't ever intend to knowingly troll a video after it's won an award- that's why I've held off on sending one in to Otakon until now, as I wanted to know the results of ACen first.

However, not everyone agrees with this and while I may not like it personally, as long as it doesn't violate the rules of the con there really isn't anything wrong with it. If the con rules have an anti-trolling clause, I would expect it to be enforced- as long as it is done so evenly and across the board. I think it's far more unfair for some videos to be cut because of a rule violation but others not because the person making the decision happened to really like one of the videos.

While there are a lot of contests- there are a whole heck of a lot more editors than there are awards to be won. And this is, I believe, as it should be- there are going to be some editors who are just better than the others, that's partly the whole point of having awards.

I'm in the same camp as Nappy as I mostly just want to see my work up on the big screen in from of lots of people- I'm probably as pissed off about the whole time-slot thing at ACen as I am about the judging. I am glad there were a lot of people at the pre-judging though to see almost all of the videos that were submitted. In this way, I'm glad that The Chibi Things (That Kill) spanked my Who Let the 'Fros Out in ACen's contest- it means I can submit WLtFO to Otakon with a fairly clear conscience. Even if it will almost certainly get beaten, not unlikely by Nappy's other video.

The deadline for ACen was before Anime Boston, so I'm not very happy to be labeled as rude.
