One of the subjects the original poster brought up in the thread was a perceived need that one must be flashy in order to win. The other dealt with winning vs. self-fulfillment (or whatever you want to call it).

Both topics have been addressed, in fairly even measure. It seems to me that you're becoming defensive.

I used after effects in a video last year and didn't make the finals of 2 of the big cons I submitted to.

Concept is far more important.

Sadly my AMV I submitted for AWA Pro did not make any cuts for the final listings for any of the categories I nominated my video in.

I go into more detail on my LJ (it's a locked entry, only certain people will see it), but the gist of it is:

To be an effective AMV creator and competitor, you have to know how to use AfterEffects. The top 4 nominated videos all use AfterEffects to some degree.

My peers seem to have lumped me in with the other AMV creators that shouldn't have been in the Pro contest but entered anyway. It seems I got passed over for other crappy videos that somehow made the final cut. I followed the rules, used quality source footage, and made a great entry to me... and I still feel like a total loser.

What good is making AMVs for yourself when you don't even make the final cut for a contest? My entry at Katsucon didn't make the final cut, and now my entry for AWA Pro didn't make the final cut either. If it really isn't about the prizes or recognition, then why do I still feel crappy about not being in the final list of candidates for the categories?

I wonder if any of you out there can give encouragement for those of us that didn't make the final nominations lists for AWA Pro... things that happen like this really tend to discourage me from making more AMVs.... how can I keep myself motivated to making AMVs and competing on the same level as the heavy-hitting power-editors?

Thanks for your indulgence. :)
Now don't get down on yourself it takes time and practice to make the finals. I should know it took me over 2 years to get into Otakon. And even then 2 videos had to be disqualified for being a troll and that's why my amv got in. Anyway I didn't use Adobe Premier up untill this month all the previous videos used MGI Video Wave 4. And yet you can still make videos worthy of contest and recognition. You just have to work at it and be determined by making your amv powerful on lyrical sync and musical sync (beats and what not.) Also AMV's are suppost to be fun and is suppost to reflect you in some ways. You are the creator so it is how you feel about the song and how you interpret it. My thing is I'm the under dog, nobody expects to see me coming and that makes me determine to make the best amv I can. And as long as there are creators better than me then my goal is to become as good as them if not better. If I do become better then I look for new ways to improve. You have to do the same. Don't get disappointed over not making the finals. One thing is for sure if I want to make Otakon next year I have to work twice as hard knowing I barely made it this year. And to see my video on the big screen is the only inspirtation I need.

You were robbed too, that Yu yu Hakashu/Memories crossover was the shiznit!

BTW, I'm never used AE but I've won a few things, I don't think AE is required to make a good video that people will enjoy.

For the most part, people that don't use After Effects (*raises hand*) simply haven't had the personal inspiration to make some vision come to life. When they do... they'll go ahead and make that vision come true. Whether it's in After Effects, Premiere, Photoshop, MS Paint... you need the idea first.
A resounding "x2" to all of the above. I'm not imaginative enough to yet have been able to visualize a scene that would require After Effects for to create, so I don't feel any need to use it.

I won pro's action catagory last year. I have no earthly idea how to use after effects, or any other effect programs besides Premiere and Photoshop. AE is absolutely and without a doubt completely unessecary for your video to win or even qualify.
Just keep on keeping on, and try again next year.
