Eh, I've been hosting off of my cable on an FTP for about a year now. Not the fastest thing out there, but it gets the job done. I haven't entered a contest for server space before, but I imagine more people entered the contests for the sake of entering the contests. I doubt anyone who truely wants to distribute their video would wait for a contest to be over just to have a "chance" at getting it hosted.
As for college (starting at NCSU in a few weeks), I'll probrably continue with the FTP and just set a cap on the simultainious uploads and if it proves necessary a cap on the upload bandwidth used. AMVs aren't the biggest files in the world (though I'm seeing more and more hovering around the 100 mb mark when not long ago it seemed like 50 was huge), so if you're capped, you should still have the thing in ten minutes.
Will the Golden Donut destroy creator-sponsored contests?
