Otakon AMV Contest New Addition; OSV Competition
The Otakon AMV contest has a new addition this year that many creators may be interested in:
OTAKON 2007 ANIME MUSIC VIDEO CONTEST; OPENING SEQUENCE VIDEO COMPETITION (OSV)
http://www.otakon.com/events_amvosvc.asp
Ever seen the Otakon Anime Music Video Contest and wonder how we come up with those cool openings that play at the start of the contest every year?
Ever thought you could make something better?
Here is your chance to show us!
For the first time ever, you the Anime Music Video creator are being given the opportunity to create the opening sequence that will play at the beginning of Otakon's Anime Music Video Contest!
***NOTICE***
There has been some confusion as to what the Opening Sequence portion of the intro is. To help clarify, the OSV is the BEGINNING part of the contest intro. It is NOT the entire intro (which consists of the spoiler warning, and welcome message). Please keep this in mind when creating your OSV's.

I still love this one:
06. NO REPEAT SUBMISSIONS
Once we screen your OSV at OTAKON, that's it for that video as far as the Otakon is concerned. Don't resubmit a "finished" version of it later, claiming that the original one was just a "work in progress". If it was good enough to send to a contest in the first place, then it was finished.

Figured it was still worth having in there. Don't want someone making one for this year then resubmitting the SAME EXACT opener for 2008. It's just in bad taste is all.Scintilla wrote:I still love this one:06. NO REPEAT SUBMISSIONS

Remember these things don't have to say Otakon 2007. That's not a requirement. Though having "Otakon" someplace in the thing would be a plus.
We have videos for 2005 and 2006Kusoyaro wrote:Any chance of you guys posting previous Otakon openings just so we can get an idea of what we're trying to do? "Opening sequence" and "superheroes" is kind of a vague guideline. I can host the files if you need hosting...

However there are legal issues involved with linking y o u t u b e hosted video to Otakon's main site. As well as possible issues with hosting the videos ourselves. Until I hear otherwise this is the only place we will be able to provide a link (as this is not an Official Otakon run site/forum).

By all means go right ahead. I personally think it would be kinda boring to use the same music year after year, but there is no reason why you can't.Scintilla wrote:Out of curiosity, can we use songs that have been featured in past years' contests? And if we can't, then what are they so we know to avoid them?
Or do you mean music that has been used in AMV's from the contest? Either way, knock yourself out ^_^.

So is this looking to become an annual thing because hoestly with the lack of time to do this. you may not get as many submissions this year but if it is known this will be an annual thing it would be fun to do something knowing a full year in advance.

My intention is to have it as a yearly thing. Though I have no idea how long I'll be around as Dept. Head, nor if my eventual successor (whoever that may be) will want to continue it.Illia Sadri wrote:So is this looking to become an annual thing because hoestly with the lack of time to do this. you may not get as many submissions this year but if it is known this will be an annual thing it would be fun to do something knowing a full year in advance.
As for time, there is PLENTY of time lol. All the other opening videos I made in past years were something I did in a day or two. You guys have a few months left for everything. Besides, you will NEVER get a years notice on this kinda stuff (the OSV competition or the AMV Contest) simply because the planning of the convention does not work in that sort of time frame (in fact the AMV Dept. is one of the first to have anything posted or released to the public). Even if we did not have to deal with the Otakon server host being changed, the earliest the rules would have been out was in December or January (6 months from the deadline tops).
If everyone REALLY needs a year of notice about the contest or anything there is a very simple way of doing that. Just assume that the previous years rules are the same, until told differently.
I'm actually very surprised every year at the number of creators that wait and wait until the Rules actually come out before even starting their entry. I mean, the basic stuff like format requirements, what is allowed or not, remains the same year after year. Even this year with the new category and things being reworked a bit, all video requirements are the same as they have been.
You guys are intelligent, I would have thought this to be obvious by now.
Back in December when I made the post about the basic rules we were not sure that everything would be the same, but that was the reason for the post in the first place... to give a heads up about possible changes as well as let you know what would remain the same so everyone could at least get started.
And of course this does not apply to the OSV competition (not this year, as it is brand new), but it will apply next year.
I'm sorry if this sounds preachy, it's not directed towards you Illia, but just general observations about the contest that a lot of our regular submitters likely should have picked up on by now.
The number of OSV entries this year is really inconsequential to be honest. As a new addition to the contest I don't expect it to be super popular yet. Like anything it will take time for it to catch on. Same with the Musical Parody/AMV-Hell Category from the AMV contest. And both additions will likely need some refining as we may run into some sort of unforeseen issue as yet unknown.
But even if no one submits an OSV entries this year, I still have plenty of ideas for the intro.

Well I know most people procrastinate.... but basically was referring to the people who are going to go all out and be really flashy in making something like this. For instance I already have a good idea of something that could be tried but would probably be really effects heavy and thus take a long time.
The reason I never have videos for Otakon is mostly because I am in classes all year and hardly have time to edit outside of the summer. Has nothing to do with the rules being up at whatever time. Heck I work for acen and never have an entry for the staff category there because my vids all get done in the autumn.
But its understandable that if you have a new contest that certain things need to be worked out. It's actually a very neat idea in all honesty. I just was hopihng that should it not be popular right away that it would not be instantly scrapped. That's a good way to take it.

All procrastinators must die! Lol, actually even I get lazy at times. For instance we actually received the first AMV entry for the contest on Saturday. But I was lazy and waited till Monday to email the creator letting them know we have it =^PIllia Sadri wrote:Well I know most people procrastinate.... but basically was referring to the people who are going to go all out and be really flashy in making something like this. That's pretty much me being lazy.
And I know what you mean about not having time. I may be wrong but it seems like a great number of AMV creators tend to only have one hobby, and that's anime... so they spend a LOT of time on it. My interests are far too diverse to possibly hope of ever having the time some creators do to work on things. That and after messing with Otakon AMV stuff most of the year, I tend to burn out that little part in the back of my brain that says "AMV's YAY!", so that by the end of the con it's saying "AMV's.... *click* *bang*!"
But by no means would I scrap the OSV idea just because we don't get enough entries. All it takes is one really, since only one can be chosen. As long as we get that, SUCCESS!
Seriously though, a number of creators expressed interest in this last year when we did the poll for it, and were somewhat disappointed we did not do it then. It should go over pretty well, but if not it's no big deal.
So yeah, any other questions, comments, feedback... send it my way.
