Esoteric contests formats

Post by spoichiche » Tue Dec 02, 2025 5:31 am

Hi all,

I need some help figuring out what kind of amv contest format exists out there, specifically ones that don't fit the mold.

For a personal project of mine, i'm trying to model amv contests and their results into a standardised format. Ideally, that format would be flexible enough to accommodate any contests but structured enough to be able to efficiently lookup and query things like all the different ranking-positions and standalone awards for a specific amv, or for a specific editor, or an entire amv-studio/team.

I'm currently just prototyping stuff, and for testing purposes, i'm using a few types of contests:

- the "classic" : with different amv rankings categories : overall/action/dance/drama/horror/etc, and/or editor based rankings, and/or specific awards.
- team based rankings where teams make a single mep projects
- team based rankings "Soul's team IC"-styled, where each team member makes an amv, that will receive a score contributing to an overall team score
- "Level up"-styled amv ranking, where amvs are edited by a 'rookie' and coached by a 'pro'
- VCA-styled amv/editor rankings with multiple elimination rounds for different categories

I know i'm missing tournament-style formats, and i'm currently unsure on how to deal with it.
If you guys know of any real life exemples of it, i'd love to hear about it, as well as any other exemples of contests with more esoteric formats.

Thanks,
Never forget that amvs are standing on top of 100 years of Cinema.

Project Org Editor would be an example of an AMV tournament. You can view all the info related to that here: viewforum.php?f=163

There are also other AMV tournaments that have happened on the Org in the past, like the Quickening and AMV Roulette. You can view the threads relating to those as well viewforum.php?f=74

Aha ! "Project Org Editor" and "the Quickening", I know those names. Couldn't remember them for the life of me.
Well, in retrospect, there weren't hard to find, but i just didn't think of searching in the "org supported event" sub section. Didn't know of AMV Roulette.
Thanks a lot, i'll dig into these ('v')b

Not sure if you meant this by tournament style, but there are tourney-styled AMV competitions where editors directly compete against each other in an elimination format. With editors creating a new edit for every new round.

Stuff like Joseppy's tourney: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=P ... ZUjef0ygId
And Leather Tournament: https://youtu.be/JXOvlPk2JDw?si=VNcsX0bWMc8BJIES (couldn't find a playlist so here's just an entry)
