as for buying it from a retailer i could not help you best bet would be to build the computer from scratch and research the best parts for what your looking for but as for bare minimal specs I've tried using 2gigs of ram Intel Core 2 Duo and a Nividia 8800GT and got almost no lag time using AE but with the newer graphics cards out and the quad core getting cheaper you might be able to get a better deal but yea go for a Quad Core Processor 2 gigs of ram minimum and a HD graphics card if you want to do HD editing and you should be fine

Yea i think the best thing to do is make it from scratch because i really don't know much about computers but i think i can find someone to help me built a badass comp for editing. =D.

Here are my 2 computers that i use for gaming and editing and the price range. I would highly recommend finding a locally owned shop because they usually build their own machines.

ASRock AM2NF6G
AM2 AMD X2 4600+
OCZ Gamer Gold 2Gb DDR2 800Mhz
BFG 8600GTS OC'd

This computer cost me about $600 to build including a decently large HDD and DVD Burner. I have no issues with running games or editing video as large as 1280xXXX I do get the occasional slow down if i try running multiple large programs (Vegas, Photoshop, While Converting Video) If you don't have the money a system like that will do you good. I would recommend an 8800GT or 9600GT instead of the 8600 Series.

ABit AN32X
AM2 AMD X2 6000+
OCZ Gamer Gold 4Gb DDR2 800Mhz
eVGA 8800GTS Superclocked

This System cost me about $1400 when the 8800 series and the AM2 6000+ first came out, you can get the parts for a bit cheaper now. A system like this will not lag while editing and i highly recommend AMD for their performance over price, and the fact that the Memory bus is a lot better with the AMD chips.

AMD Phenom Quad Core 9600 Black Edition Sata Maxtor 320gig HardDrive
Sata Samsung DVD Burner
20inch WideScreen Samsung
Pc 6400 2gb CORSAIR DOMINATOR Dual Channel Memory
Asus M2N32-SLI Mainboard
Nvidia Geforce 8600 GT Video Card
now this one runs great but when it is time to extract the video or convert it to divx50 or mp4 it takes its time my old x2 6000+ would do it in less time this is set up cost me about 700 bucks now i have been looking into another machine i want to build with a core 2 quad 2.6ghz 1333mhz front side bus and 12mb cache it is $355 the sli 780i mainboard for about $250 500gb gighard drive for $79 the gx2 9800 for about $449 pc3 ocz sil ram 2gigs for $89 850w powersupply for $90 now with this setup you should have to problem at all i think it all is like 1500 or 1700 at most for a beast of a machine hope this helps

Personally, I use a 17" MacBook Pro (2.6GHz Intel Core 2 Duo w/ 2GB of RAM and 250GB HDD) and a 17" iMac G5, and both run Final Cut Express and Pro and Final Cut Studio 2 very well (though the MBP runs FCS2 much nicer). It may be out of your price range, but if you can pick up a used iMac (G5 and up) and get iLife 06 (NOT iLife 08 if you want a better editing experience with iMovie, iMovie 06 is a much better editor then 08), you have a basic editing system. Toss in an extra $200 and you can pick up Final Cut Express to go with it.

Also, don't plan on upgrading it yourself, which may be a deterrent. You'll be better off to send it to Apple to get it upgraded.

That's just me, that's just what I use.

It doesn't matter if you get iLife 08 because you can download iMovie HD (iMovie 06) for free here.

Your better off to have iLife 08 because the rest of it is much better.

I have very little or no lag with my comp:

Dell XPS 400
OS: Windows XP Media Center
Hard Drive(s) 225GB + 160GB + 300GB + 400GB External
Processor: Pentium D 820 2.8 Ghz w/Dual Core Tech
RAM: 2GB dual channel DDR2
Video Card: 256MB nVidia GeForce 8600

Keep in mind this is from early 2006. If you want pure unadulterated speed, go with either an Intel Core 2 Quad/Extreme or AMD Phenom processor since many NLE's support the quad processors. Getting 2GB+ of RAM doesn't hurt either just don't exceed 4GB if you are using a 32Bit Windows OS as only 64Bit ones support more than that.

most computers can handle sony Vegas and AAE, it just depends how smoothly you want each program to run. How much time are you willing to waste for rendering and all that junk.

Do you plan on using this computer for anything else other than video editing?

If you have unlimited budget ($5k-6k+) you can shell out for a computer that is superior in every way to the Mac Pro Octo-Core.

Never buy pre-built computers ever, if you are on low budget. Macs add at least a 75% premium just because it is a "Mac" (name brand). Same with Sony and HP. Dell adds the least premium, but they still do it. They give you the closest thing to a personal custom built computer.

If you have a LOT of $$$$, shell out for the Asus Z7S WS workstation motherboard with dual socket 771 processors. Get at least 8GB of DDR-800 FB-DIMM RAM. Get (2) ATI 4870x2 (released August 12th, 2008, the fastest video card in the WORLD right now) in CrossFire, a SAS card and a couple 15,000rpm HDDs. Get (2) Intel QX9775, get some nice water cooling in there, a version of windows that is 64bit (xp or vista, whatever you want), and you should be set for the worlds fastest workstation board. Overclock it if you want. This is probably the best set up in the world right now. Next to linked Linux machines with like 38+ cores or something.

If you have moderate amount of cash (1.5k to 3k range), i would still suggest custom building. Get the Asus Maximus II Formula, or the Asus Rampage Extreme or the Asus P5E WS Professional. Any workstation, or high end gaming board will do. Slap a Intel Quad Core in there. The Q6600's got a massive price cut recently, since Intel is launching it's nice stuff soon. So now is a good time to get a Core 2 Quad. Get some high end ram, at LEAST 4GB. get the (1) ATI 4870x2. (2) 10000rpm Western Digital 300GB SATAII Velociraptors, put them in a performance RAID. Again, get 64 bit windows. XP or Vista, your choice. And you have a very very very decent computer. Top 2-3% of all the people here on the forums. if you got an extra 300-400, invest in a nice water cooling system, and you can over clock that Q6600.

If you have low budget (500 to 1.5k). You can get a pre-built system by Dell or Sony, or whatever. Or you can custom build your own. If you get a pre-built system by Dell or Sony or etc, your specs will NOT be as good as your own custom build. But try to match similar specs. Core 2 Duo (dual core), any mobo than can handle the Core 2 Duo, gigabyte or asus or anything that will fit in your price range. 2-4 GB of ram, preferably 4GB. (2) 320GB Seagate 7200rpm HDDs, put them in performance RAID. (1) ATI 3870x2. You should be set for a good machine. If you have 2GB of ram, you can settle for Windows XP 32bit or Vista 32bit. But if you get anything more than 3GB of ram, you MUST get a 64bit system, to make use of that extra RAM.

Most programs out there are not made for quad core or octo-core systems, although Adobe is coming out with CS4 soon, which WILL be 64bit. Meaning if you got a quad core cpu and a 64bit OS, CS4 will run like DREAM. and things will run smoother and faster. Adobe After Effects CS4 will be amazingly smooth.

Not sure about Vegas, but one can hope for the best right? ;)

Zenkia, if you need help finding parts, don't hesitate to ask me.

-- my current set up is:
Asus Z7S WS
2xIntel Xeon 5430 2.66Ghz Harpertown OC to 3.2Ghz.
1xATI 4870x2
8GB of Cruicial DDR-800 FB-DIMM RAM
Windows Vista Ultimate 64bit
1x300GB 10000rpm WD Velociraptor SATAII
3x500GB 7200rpm Seagate SATAII (1 pair is RAID 0)
Watercooling, single loop for CPU0 and CPU1. Replaced NB heatsink. OCZ MemCool fan.
MM U2-UFO.
2x28" ViewSonic Widescreen LCD

This is OVER kill for video editing. As I'd had AAE rendering, Premiere rendering, WoW and FF (with 20+ tabs open) working with little to no lag.
Go this route if you got cash, otherwise, the other people on this thread have posted VERY good rigs as well, and are WAY more worth it.
