Looking to upgrade my video editing software... recs?

Post by EnQuatre » Wed Nov 18, 2015 10:38 pm

Hey folks,

I've been using Cyberlink Powerdirector 12 for my editing purposes thus far, but after getting crappy encodes for the umpteenth time, I think I'm finally due for an upgrade.

What would you folks recommend? I'm interested in Premiere or Vegas Pro, but I'm also looking to save money... Are the trial versions any good? Or, are any of you using older editions that you would still recommend?

I'm not into wild and extravagant use of masking or blender effects by any means, so I'm just looking for a fast, powerful non-linear editor with high-quality encoding and some good-looking but basic effects and transitions. I'd be willing to shell out as much as a couple hundred bucks, I suppose, but I'm not likely to go out and buy the full-price version of the latest Vegas Pro package.

I'd appreciate any recs you guys might have!

Well, being controversial... if you're on a budget...

Linux and associated software is free.

Yeah, I know, paradigm shift.

But there is a LOT of FUD in regards to Linux so it's not considered for a lot of the wrong reasons. Just mentioning.

My AMV's will show what Kdenlive can do and it sounds like it will match your requirements for $0.

I'll duck out now. Normally Linux is a non-starter for most so I'll say no more.
Consider it brainstorming - all options on the table.

...and they said it couldn't be done!!!

What, will Powerdirector not let you export a lossless .AVI master?

Oh, it will--it just comes with the ugliest grid of weird black blocks all over the final product. Completely unusable. Checked the support forums and apparently this is a known problem that has yet to be fixed.
