Bumping this thread because its a question I would like to have answered as well. Its been a long time since I last made any AMVs, I would like to get back into it again, but my most reliable editing program I've tried using on my new machine (which has more ram, newer processor, and a way better vcard) will either not load or is too slow in playing back the video and music together. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I would recommend a webpage called http://www.videocopilot.net.
They have tons of great and easy to follow tutorials. ;)

I use ffmpeg, sox, audacity, and six self written Bash scripts for making AMVs.

I personally recommend Wondershare Video Converter as i already use it and get satisfied results from it. Hope you also get what you want as there are variety of video editing tools there.
