Cannot import .AVI files...

Post by spreet » Sat Nov 08, 2008 10:13 pm

I read a thread that was similar to this problem but it wasn't any help. I have .avi files that I would like to import however I get an error message saying 'unsupported compression in file'. I'm not sure what this all means but I was under the impression that Premiere supported .avi files. At least that's what I've read anyway. Does anyone know how I can fix this?

You're using DivX/XviD.

Convert it to lagarith, and then import it again.

It is an .exe file. I have a Mac and I tried searching for a .dmg format but it's no use. Am I looking in the wrong place or is there an alternative?

You're using DivX/XviD as your compression for the .avi.

Lagarith won't work on a Mac. Use AviDemux, or some such program to convert the files to Huffyuv, then use that in Premiere.

You'll need to download Perian to use Huffyuv.
... yea ...

Though I'm not the thread starter, I've been experiencing similar issues. I used avidemux for the huffyuv but Premiere still won't import it. :? Perian is only good for playback correct? Though I've never had an issue playing back the files in Quicktime (I did upgrade to quicktime pro).

Okay. I've noticed that it will import the avi files in After Affects, but won't import in Premiere.

Hmm, that's interesting. I just tested it and Premiere indeed can't import a Huffyuv file. That's odd considering other Adobe programs can (AE and Flash, specifically). Needless to say, I'd never actually tried.

Convert to DV, I guess.
