Adobe PE4 Beat Detector

Hey being the uber noob that I am, I was wondering if someone could explain the PE4 beat detector. I have read the little description in the box that explains what each slider does but i really don't understand what it is doing when it detects beats and what that does to the video when i have music to it. Essentially how do I use it effectively in my AMVs.
