Upgrading...
I've not upgraded my Premeier in years.... I have currently Premiere 5.1c....really old school.
I'd love to upgrade but do I upgrade to Pro 2 or skip it and go with the (what I assume ) is newly released CS3?
Are there any issues with CS3 being relatively new? Or is it a good upgrade to go all the way with?

Well you definitely wanna give the trial version a good run through to make sure you are ok with how premiere works now. There have been a lot of changes to various things. In my personal experience, CS3 just seems to work a bit better overall than cs2 did (cs3 actually renders previews when i tell it to), but it doesn't have hardly any actual new features over cs2, aside from time remapping.
And you definitely need to have a beefy system to run this baby...

I've got a pretty beefy system but I may be upgrading anyway on the hardware front as well.
I've got a project or two I've still got in progress on my current system so I can't really install the trial as I'd worry it would break my old project files.
Does it run anything like Avid or Final Cut Pro? I've used both at work and use FCP every day. I'd never make an amv with it so I'm not looking at macs or anything...

I've never used FCP, and the one time I tried Avid, I couldn't get it to do anything.
Here are my primary annoyances with Premiere Pro as compared to older premiere:
1. Doesn't export properly to most AVI codecs, so always export uncompressed.
2. When you preview there is a lag before it starts.
3. Scrubbing across the timeline doesnt playback audio as smoothly as in older versions.
4. Trying to copy and paste clips is more annoying.
5. You can't change most project settings once you have started.
6. Any file that contains audio will automatically have the audio "conformed". This means premiere pro will basically convert it to a 32-bit uncompressed wav and store it on your HD. These can get big, especially if you import long video clips that contain audio.
And the main advantages that I feel Premiere Pro has over older premieres:
1. Effects show up without having to preview.
2. It resizes footage a little better.
3. It has a more pretty interface.
4. It runs on newer operating systems like vista.
5. Hmm... I'm really struggling here :\

FINALLY, someone besides me (Zar) actually thinks that old Premiere > Premiere Pro. I tell this to people and they just can't comprehend that at all for some reason.

hmmm.. the more and more I think about it I think I'll get a separate editing system set up for a new Adobe version... I am really familiar with FCP.... not through and through because we don't' do that much of it on a news show but I'm very confident in my fcp abilities.
I guess my questions now fall into extra features... things that make or help with videos... Effects/transitions? Are these better in CS3 or do they all still suck except for cross dissolve?

Playing with the corner pins is pretty fun.
