6.0 vs Pro 2.0 for HD

Post by DJ_Izumi » Sun Jan 21, 2007 7:53 am

I'm wondering if anyone has any opinions on this. Adobe advertises optimizations for Premiere 1.5 and 2.0 for HD video editing, even more so with 2.0. I am rather interested in attempting a 720p AMV. So I'm wondering if what Adobe talks about actually offers much in the way of impreovement for editing HD video in Pro 2.0 vs 6.0.

The reason I ask this and don't just try the programs side by side myself is because my work horse desktop is an Athlon 2500 XP+. It lacks SSE2 which Premiere Pro 2.0 has as a requirement. However my Celeron M 1.3ghz laptop does have SSE2. Naturally, I don't want to edit video on a tiny XGA LCD screen but I can connect the laptop to the network, to the 21" CRT and run it at 1600x1200, and connect an external USB keyboard and mouse to it so it can run about as comfortably as a desktop. But while it has SSE2 it has deficencies over the desltop. 1.3ghz vs (about par with a Pentium 4 2.0ghz), vs an overclocked 2500 that's on par with a 3200 (Or a P4 @ 3.2ghz). The laptop has 512mb of memory vs 1.5gb in the desktop as well. You can see the delemma.

So I'm asking if there are any true advantages and if using my laptop to run Pro 2.0 would be worth it, or if 6.0 or 6.5 can do the job just fine.

Firstly, I don't use Premiere and have only played around with it briefly (versions 5.x, 6.x, Pro1.0).

Premiere 6.0 users, does Premiere 6.0 support resolutions at 1280 x 720 or greater? I assume that as long as Premiere 6.0 accepts video at 1280 x 720 (for 720p) and can export at that resolution, HD editing should work (although performance may not be that responsive).

Premiere Pro should have better widescreen video support, but primarily is going to be better than 6.0 at importing HD footage from tape/camera sources (HDV, DVCPRO HD/P2 (w/plugin), XDCAM (w/plugin). And supporting output to those formats.
Having trouble playing back videos? I recommend: Image

In my experience in editing at SD resolutions, Premiere 6 is MUCH faster than Premiere Pro, at least twice, maybe 3 times as fast. Unless adobe has some serious optimizations for HD video, I don't see how it could be faster...
