Cannot import .AVI files...

Yeah it looks like dv may have to be it (though mpg looks pretty good to me too, but AE won't import those). Uncompressed works fine going back and forth between programs as well. I have half a mind to import footage there then send it over as a project to Premiere. Anyway, thanks. At least I know it's not just me.

Well, between MPEG and DV, DV will give you the smallest hit to quality. Plus it doesn't have the ungodly size uncompressed files would have.

As far as lossy codecs are concerned, DV will have the best quality. (Quality loss is negligible and barely noticeable on a first generation DV pass.)
