Possible problem with ASPI layer installation

Post by Sereenie » Sun Dec 31, 2006 5:19 pm

I got a brand new computer for Christmas and I'm in the process of reinstalling everything. But I possibly have a problem with the ASPI layer.

I now have a Turion 64 X2 TL-56 processor, running on WinXP SP2, so downloaded aspi_471a2.exe and installed the layer using the C:\adaptec\aspi\install.bat XP64 command. But when I then use the checker, this is what I see.

From that, I deduced that I should have installed the layer using C:\adaptec\aspi\install.bat XP32, so I undid the previous installation and redid it this way. This is what the checker now shows.

It seems to me like everything is fine and dandy now. But I still have a nagging suspiscion that even if everything seems to have installed fine, it might not be normal to install a 32 layer for a 64 system--that is, if it *is* a 64-bit system. I'm rather clueless about these things, and that is why I turn to you in hope of getting a confirmation.

Thanks for your help!

Unless you are running Windows XP Professional x64 Edition, you don't need (or can even use) 64-bit applications or drivers. While your AMD processor is 64-bit, the extra capabilities are unused for now while you are running the other versions of WinXP. Windows Vista will provide full support for 64-bit processors and applications while maintaining compatibility with 32-bit code. Of course, Vista isn't out yet for the general public until sometime in Jan. 2007 (hopefully, barring any further delays), so it's nothing to concern yourself over now.

BTW, why do you need to install an ASPI layer? Most programs for windows can use Microsoft's SPTI instead. Or they install and use their own ASPI driver, like Ahead's Nero Burning ROM does.

Thanks for your quick answer, Willen! I *knew* I was missing something!

As for the ASPI layer, I simply installed because it's always been part of my routine before installing the AMVApp (as per EADFAG's instructions). I know EADFAG's outdated, but I figure if it ain't broke, don't fix it! The installation part's never failed me before, so I had no reason to suspect it might partly be unnecessary.

I'll be sure to read those links you provided.

Thanks again!
