Best way to get video for AMVs from a perfectly good DVD?

I've followed VicBond's guide pretty much velcro, and I must agree it works wonders for footage that is kinda old, or just not good quality (those cheap Japanese bootlegs

).

However, recently I've bought 2 whole series on DVD (Elfen Lied and Love Hina), and when I started getting video from them, I realized there's just way too much stuff that I'm doing to them. They are American DVDs, perfect quality and all that, I dont need to do all those fancy blurs and smooths and stuff (not a lot anyways).

I was just wondering if anyone here knew a better/faster way to get video from non-bootleg DVDs that already have great quality.

Thanks in advance... if no one replies I suppose I shall go about it the long-drawn out way again haha..

Just don't use any filters on them? I'm not sure I know exactly what you're asking otherwise...

Hmm.. well.. I guess what I'm asking is: How would you guys go about getting footage from DVDs that need little, if no filtering?

Rip them and index them the same way as always, then just don't apply any AVISynth filters besides an IVTC.

The may have much better quality then the bootleg sources you did use before, but I'm sure they are far away from being perfect. If they are usual 4...5 episodes on single sided single layer DVDs, they still can be improved at least with some spatial/temporal cleaning and FastLineDarken() if there are no other issues.

Improvements are sometimes subjective... I've seem video footage where too much filtering has taken away something from the look...

When I was using Elfen Lied for my AMV Hell CE round 20 segments, I'm thinking that the only thing I did to it aside from the IVTC with TFM/TDecimate was to do some very light temporal smoothing with deen("w3d",2,8,8). After that it would just be a matter of resizing that footage to the right aspect ratio, especially since it's anamorphic.

Love Hina, on the other hand, isn't nearly as pristine as Elfen Lied is. It could really use stronger filtering than that, but seeing as how I've not used LH footage for a long time I can't really say how I'd deal with it now.

I deny that you have footage that can't look better by applying filtering. It cal always look better, however better is, as Vlad says, subjective.

I haven't yet met a source I liked straight off the bat, but then I work mostly with older, non-cg, cel-based anime like Utena and KOR and Macross. Utena especially was a piece of crap. Burnt frames, reel holes, jaggies, pixels, washed out color... I spent months filtering alone, let alone editing.

But what I'd do is index it, telecine/decimate it, toss it into vdubmod, create a lossless copy, delete vobs, edit from lossless copy, ???, PROFIT.

And even if you don't think you can make it look better, you can always make it more compressible.
