no if it's widescreen anime it should be about 720X400 or 640X352 or 848X480
depending on your preference... it's the ratio of the length vs width....

640X480 is the "standard" for full screen.

the reason you resize it manually is because on a computer the display isn't going to automatically adjust itself like a DVD player does....

The DVD player doesn't adjust anything... TVs are 720 (0.9PAR) pixels wide.

but it resets the AR for widescreen :P (at least anamorphic widescreen)
and if you don't have the black lines on the left and right older TVs will cut off the edges, thats why there's a "safe area"

Yea, that depends entirely on the TV and the DVD player. There, sadly, isn't a standard way that wide screen TVs accept signals, nor is there a standard way that connected devices send them (I really wish they had invented one - I have to fuck with the zoom button on my TV way too much)
