Choppy video

Hi everyone, I am new here. Was curious about something. After searching high and low, I stumbled onto this site and the fantastic faq herein about ecoding your anime vids with the Xvid codec via vdubmod, so that u can watch them on your standalone dvd player. Great news for me - since I hate watching anime/movies on my pc. I followed the instructions in the faq dillegently and my efforts proved to be fruitful - bleach in xvid format on my tv screen. My only problem is this: the resulting vids don't play as fluid as the originals. I really notice it during the credit roll at the end and beginning. The vids are still very watchable though but I really would like to get this fluidity problem resolved. Any suggestions are more than welcome. Thanks in advance.

Wait... you have an XviD DVD player? What's the model?

Yes!! Its a noname brand called a DAYS. It dosen't play certain files though....... for example the original bleach fansubs don't play I have to re encode to make them watchable. The good thing is that I can squeeze like 25 eps and more onto a standard 4.7GB DVD. The only other downside is that due to overscan fansubs don't fit on my tv but I found a way to fix that.

I hate to say it, but it's probably the faiure of your DVD player at decoding and playing the video - most likely due to the bitrates. The only thing you could possibly do is to transcode the offending videos to something like mpeg2 in the hopes the decoding process will use less of the player's capibilities leaving more for quality streaming.

Alternatively... the line between TVs and monitors has all but disapeared with new models of HDTVs that double as monitors becoming more commonplace.

Probably it is a player that is able to play back DivX files. So the XviD files have to be encoded DivX compliant. In addition a DivX capable player is only required to playback certified profiles. So the files that don't play are either not DivX compliant or don't fit the profiles.

And regarding the op/ed credits that don't run smooth (and I guess pans too) - that's probably a problem of the progressive encoding. It shows only half the pictures of interlaced video. During normal action you wont notice the difference, but during moving writing or pans it becomes remarkable.

I'll try to transcode the files to mpeg and see. Fansubs;except dattebayo fansubs; and other videos encoded with the xvid codec do play with out me having to re encode them. I am not sure why. Mpeg is a much bigger file format. Oh well

No. No it's not.

Neither codec inherently produces bigger files than the other. It all has to do with the bitrates you set when encoding.
